6 Th Dally Tar Had Easetoslejrs: one le rani to sumsweir INetters.ooD'Ti by John Duntep ' Ctsff Writsr Once again it was a case of too little, too late for the Carolina baseball team as they dropped their second straight one-run game Monday at Cary Boshamer Stadium. This time the culprit was High Point College, a team with a very responsible record and an equally respectable hitter. The score was 6-5 in a game that see-sawed back and forth until High Point scored the winning run, compliments of a North Carolina error. Mike Merritt started the game and was in immediate trouble. The first two High Point batters slapped out hits and another walked to load the bases. But Merritt worked his way out of this jam, something he was not able to do when High Point came to bat in the third. Carolina bolted to the lead with a three-run second inning burst. Win Barkley singled to left to open the inning and was forced at second by an Early Jones grounder. Lindsey Ethridge singled to put men on first and second. rf r 7 I I K , ' , J It S, i how those bases-on-balls will kill ya). hr ty t A 1 1 1 n -&1,r Foster, a big, strong firstbaseman. has g II V QWI1 H"I ilidlK everything it takes to be a major leaguer.' glv V x JL V vV - FnttM- had a hjim single to left to Win Bcridty (.344) Is ona of four UNC players bsttSng over .3C3. Here, Ms trying High Point starter Billy Sorrell then tried what seemed to be a successful; pickoff but firstbaseman Otis Foster made his only mistake all day. Jones took off as Foster let the throw get away, from him. The throw to the plate was bad and Jones scored. The next batter, Mike Wilkerson,. pulled a sharp liner down the left field" line and out of the ballpark. And just : like that the Heels were on top. But as things seem to be going lately, an early Tar Heel lead is a bad omen. This writer began to experience deja vu as High Point battled back to take the lead, much the same as Duke had been this past week in Durham. The five-run High Point rally was led by Foster and some bases-on-balls (oh, Foster had a sharp single to left to score a run in the five-run third inning. Allen Brumfield didn't hurt matters any when he stroked a bases loaded single, driving home two more. The other High Point runs came on a Paul Walter single and a bases-loaded walk (see how those walks kill ya?). The Tar Heels had clawed back to make a 5-5 game of it on an Early Jones sacrifice fly and a nice double steal. But High Point got the winning run when shortstop Kevin Haeberle made a two out error, allowing Brumfield to score from third. So once again there is no joy in Mudville, as Chapel Hill might well be called after all the rain it has had. The Tar Heels overall record dropped to 10 7, while High Point leaves town with an impressive 15-1 record. And as Coach Rabb of Carolina said, "They'll beat some more teams before they're through. They're a good club." j? DURHAM M by Tex Ward Staff Writer North Carolina's men's tennis team scored impressive victories over the long Easter weekend defeating Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia, 9-0, and Princeton, 7-2. A key ACC match with Maryland scheduled for Saturday was rained out. Friday's win over UVA gives Carolina a share of the early ACC lead. The Tar Heels have won the conference championship five consecutive years. "Obviously, I am pleased with this win," UNC Coach Don Skakle said. "1 was a little surprised that we shut them out, but we played well down the line. I like to see us take command as we did in most of the matches."
