Finding an apartment in Chapel Hill
this fall is much like the proverbial
search for a needle in a haystack not
impossible, but difficult.
Students arriving in Chapel Hill face
a problem if they have not already made
housing arrangements since available
apartments are almost nonexistent.
But exceptions can be found. Old
Well Apartments Manager Chuck
Clayton reported last Monday 50
vacancies in the complex located on
Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro. The
vacancies, however, are all two
bedroom apartments costing SI 75 a
month. A nine month lease is available
at no extra charge.
Pinegate Apartments has
approximately 30 available apartments,
Pinegate employee Susan Horsley said.
Located on Pinegate Circle, these
apartments are primarily one bedroom
units renting for $ 1 80. Chapel H ill buses
begin stopping at Pinegate August 23 on
a 90-day trial basis.
Mary Billy of the Village Apartments
said there are a few one and two
bedroom units unleased, but added that
they will probably be filled soon. The
apartments, located on Franklin Street,
rent for $219 and $249 for one and two
bedroom units, respectively.
Eight apartments may be available
for a couple weeks at the Chateau
Apartments on Weaver Road in
Carrboro. Rent for these one bedroom
units is $160 a month.
Chase Park Apartments and Elliot
Woods Apartments, both on Elliot
Road, have vacancies. Both complexes
are projects of the Department, of
Housing and Urban Development.
Chase Park and Elliot Woods are on a
rent subsidy program, meaning the rent
is pro-rated according to the renter's
income. A steady income is necessary to

rent an apartment in either of these
complexes.
Managers of the Oaks Apartments
and Bolinwood Apartments reported
one or two vacancies, but said the
openings will probably be filled by the
end of the week.
Most other apartments and realtors
said they have no openings and do not
anticipate any in the immediate future.
Merrimac Realtors suggest students file
an application for apartments although
there are no vacancies. This puts the
prospective renter on a waiting list.
A spokesperson for Kutz Realty
commented that apartment switching
after the first week of school may leave
some openings.
Students who come to Chapel Hill
without housing arrangements can find
information on housing from the
University Department of Housing in
the lobby of Car- Building. Because the
apartments most preferred by students
are all rented, the housing staff is trying
to find rooms in private homes, trailers
and other less demanded apartments.
One- or two-bedroom apartments
that are inexpensive and on a bus route
or within walking distance of the
University are the most preferred by
students.
