Doctorow: Ragtime Judith Rossner: Looking for Mr. Goodbar o Reynolds o New designed posts o a. m CL a c f3 k- to aid development Contrary to the perennial rhetoric of campaign time, the Daily Tar Heel is not produced solely by the editor-in-chief and a trusty band of loyal staff writers. While the editor-in-chief is the top dog who sets policy, and while loyal staff writers provide the lifebiood of the newspaper, nine departmental and administrative editors also contribute to the production of the DTH. Some of these editorial posts are traditional, some are new. All require a bit of explanation. The managing editor, one of the traditional positions, supervises the departmental editors, oversees all aspects of daily production and is second in command to the editor-in-chief. Jim Grimsley, a junior English major from Pollocksville, returns to that slot after service with both the Daily Tar Heel and the summer Tar Heel as composition editor, assistant managing editor and associate editor. One of the other traditional editors Grimsley will work closely with is the composition editor, the individual who spends late hours helping to proof the paper as copy and headlines churn out of typesetting machines. The composition editor has yet to be appointed for this fall. The four departmental editors (associate, news, features and sports) explain their duties and policies (somewhat implicit in their titles) in the preceding pages. These editors complete the roster of the traditional DTH positions. The recently created editorial posts are probably the least understood by readers of the DTH because of the newness and the low visibility of these positions. To end this confusion, these editorships are explained in greater detail herein. To cope with the great amount of administrative and developmental concerns of the Daily Tar Heel, the position of executive editor has been created. The executive editor will assume primary responsibility for in house administrative affairs and procedures and will oversee studies to help shape the long-term development of the DTH. The executive editor will also keep in touch with professional societies and critical review services, survey top college papers from around the country and advise the editor-in- S 13, V O with Beginning its 85th year of editorial freedom, the Daily Tar Heel is moving forward with its award-winning coverage of news, sports and daily life in the Southern Part of Heaven. Put a little of the Village in your mailbox. There's no better way to keep in touch and you can receive the DTH each morning for less than 20 cents a day. And there's more to the DTH this year than ever before. There's a monthly magazine, New Carolinian, for an in-depth look at the town, the state, and the South. There are more pages in the daily issues, and a professional journalistic concern going far beyond most collegiate publications. In addition, the executive editor will serve as a liaison between the DTH and certain groups at the request of the editor-in-chief. Ralph J. lrace, a journalism graduate student from Farmington, Connecticut, serves as executive editor. Before coming to the Tar HeelldiSi spring, lrace worked with the N.C. State Technician and an independent student newspaper while an undergraduate at the Raleigh campus. lrace will be assisted in his duties by Gloria Sajgo, a junior journalism and Spanish major from Hungarian parentage, Argentine birthplace, and the Charlotte public school system. In order to ensure that the demands of readers are heard by the Daily Tar Heel, the post of projects editor has been added to the DTH roster. The projects editor's foremost responsibility is to conduct polls of and meetings with students to determine their views of the proper role and contents of the Tar Heel. The projects editor will also assist in preparing reports about how the editorial staff can work with the business staff to advance the financial status of the paper. An immediate responsibility is the preparation of material related to negotiation of a bulk subscription rate for faculty and staff. Barnie Day, senior journalism major from Roxboro, is the projects editor. Barnie has worked with the business office for two years and has twice promoted his views of what the DTH should be in campaigns for the editorship. The graphic arts editor fills the third of the new editorial slots. Coordinating use of photography, artwork and graphic design, searching out and implementing imaginative techniques and utilization of graphics, and advising the editor-in-chief about the general appearance of the paper are the chief functions of the graphic arts editor. Joyce Fitzpatrick, a senior from Kernersville, has assumed this post. Joyce was the editor-in-chief of the 1975 Yackety Yack. She will work closely with head photographer Martha Stevens, a senior Russian major from Charlotte in her second year as head Top of the Tin a DTH subscription.
