51
barometer for judging a high school
student's suitability for college work.
In 1974-75, high school graduates across
the nation received more SAT scores below
400 and fewer scores at or above 600 than
ever before. SAT verbal and mathematical
score averages fell sharply below their 1973
74 levels.
The 1974-75 drop in the national scores is
not a dramatic change. It is part of a trend
which finds SAT scores declining for the past
12 years, which increases the value of
moderate and high scores.
At UNC, the average scores of the entering
freshman class for the past five years have
declined from 541 verbal, 575 math in 1970
71 to 521 verbal, 561 math in 1974-75.
One reason cited for the downward trend
is increased use of telephone and television
and a decline in letter writing and newspaper
reading.
Falling SAT scores are also blamed on
declines in SAT test relevancy and teaching
quality, on unstable learning atmospheres
resulting from massive school desegregation,
on a trend away from teaching "the basics"
and on an increased number of "average
students" taking the test.
