McLeod by Lee Pace Staff Writer Carolina golf in the "Wake" of number one. "That's kind of our theme right now," Tar Heel golf coach Mike McLeod says of the new bumper sticker being seen around Chapel Hill. But if McLeod and his UNC golfers had their way, by springtime it would read "Wake Forest golf on the 'Heels' of Carolina." McLeod, though, is a realistic man. "We're right behind Wake Forest (the defending national champions) in the conference. How close we are is something Netters host Furman The UNC women's tennis team will try to snap back from its loss Tuesday against Duke as the Tar Heels host Furman today at 3 p.m. Carolina will take a 3-1 seasonal record into today's match. UNC beat Mary Baldwin, UNC-Greensboro and Mississippi University for Women in the first three matches of the season before falling to Duke. Furman will bring a team to Chapel Hill that has been weakened by illness. Carolina beat the Palladins 9-0 last year, and should blank them again today. UNC Coach Frances Hogan will be giving some of her regular starters a rest and playing other team members. Despite Furman's weakness, its no. 1 singles player is very good. Mary Ellis Nicholson defeated UNC's no. 1 player two years ago (Beth Hamilton) in three sets. Last year Nicholson fell to Carney Timberlake 6-2, 6-1. Nicholson's opponent today will be freshman Susie Black. Black has only lost five games in her four matches this year and was one of the two UNC singles players to win against Duke Tuesday. Carolina will have Jean Scott, Diane Sites, Lisa Dodson, Mary Kay McCormick and Bitsy Leach on the last five singles courts. Hogan said she hasn't decided her doubles teams. The Tar Heels' next match will be at home Wednesday against East Carolina. Next Friday UNC travels to Williamsburg, Va. to take on William and Mary. Kevin Darris Hockey team tops Devils, 5-3 Wandering around Hinton-James field in the wild aftermath of Thursday's field hockey game, the same line was uttered again and again by a jovial group of Tar Heels. "It's about time!" Carolina had just won its first game of the season against two defeats by topping a scrappy Duke team, 5-3. Forwards Bashi Buba and Vicky Greenwood led the scoring, each tallying two goals. Kathy Burwell got Carolina's other goal. No matter how slim those chances might be of unseating the Deacons this spring, McLeod and his golfers are currently using the fall portion of the 1975-76 season to prepare for a run at number one. Today and Saturday they are in Greenville, S.C., participating in the Furman Invitational Golf Tournament. The tournament has a unique format with six players from each school divided into three two-man teams, each team playing best-ball. Two teams compete for the team title while the third tries for the individual crown. afternoon, they more than doubled their season's goal output. UNC opened the scoring 5: 10 into the first half when Bashi Buba got off a hard, low drive, which Duke goalie Sandra Hingston stopped. But Vicky Greenwood was on the doorstep to put in the rebound. Shortly after the Blue Devils had forged ahead 2-1 on goals by Gail Kirchner and Holly Schwartz, UNCs Kathy Burwell found herself alone with the ball 15 feet from trie Duke net, and lifted a waist-high shot into the strings at the 15:10 mark. The parings for the two-man teams are senior Mark Bope and sophomore Wes Minton; freshmen Kevin King and Bryan Beymer, and sophomores Mark Hellffrich and Freddie Palmer. None were among the players who participated in the Dixie Intercollegiate Tournament in Pine Mountain, Ga., two weeks ago, where the Heels finished fourth before a disqualification pushed them back to 1 1th. "I want everyone to have a chance to play under tournament conditions," says McLeod. "We need to find out who can play and who can't. That's what golf is all about determining who is best for spring. Spring is the time that really counts. "But this group might be just as good as the other bunch," he added. Three members of "the other bunch" are All-Atlantic Coast Conference sophomore Bill Sibbick, who was UNC's medalist in Georgia with a 224 three-day total, and two highly-touted freshmen, John McGough and Neil Finch. "We have some excellent freshmen," says McLeod. "All four will be vying for top spots." McGough is a two-time Mississippi state champion, while Beymer collected the West Virginia state crown twice. "Sibbick is an excellent player," McLoed noted. "He won three matches in the U.S. Amatuer last year, and had a very good summer. By the time he's a senior he'll be outstanding." Carolina's next fall tournament is at Duke, November 2-3. The team also has several dual and tri-meets set with N.C. State and Duke. connected on a low drive with 7:00 remaining in the first half. Carolina outscored the Devils 2-1 in the second half. Buba got her second score at the 12:00 mark as she slammed the ball into the lower right corner after a scramble in front of the goal. Only 20 seconds later Duke's Jane Creamer pulled her team within one, but Vicky Greenwood put the game out of reach as she scored after taking a goalmouth pass from Laurie Ginter. I n that race the Tar Heels were swamped by Maryland's tightly knit pack of runners, as the home squad swept the second through eighth positions while Carolina's Ralph King took first. UNC s Tommy Ward, who finished 14th in last w..eks race, analyzed the team's weak show ing. They ( Maryland) took off real fast and everybody was psyched out," he said. "We thought we'd burn ourselves out going out that fast so we didn't go out full pace. We thought they'd come back to us but we shoulda' stayed with them." Ward added that the Terps' method of picking up and slowing dow n the pace on their home course helped them dominate the meet. "They won't blow us out like that again," he confidently added. Coach Bill Lam was highly disappointed at his team's performance and offered no excuses. "They weren't even in the race after the first mile and a half. I jumped on them pretty hard, and this has been a tough w eek in terms of w orkouts. I'm looking for them to run a good race against Clemson because they know they didn't compete against Maryland. This meet should give them a chance to let some of that frustration out." Lam said his harriers should defeat Clemson but he admitted the Tigers arc "Drastically improved. We've always beat them pretty handily since I've been here (three years) but if we don't run any better than we did last week they could win the meet. It should be a good meet." Sophomore King should once again lead the Tar Heel attack on the Finlcy Golf Course cross country trails while the return of Hamilton should bolster the squad. Ward, William Southerland and Kent Taylor round out the top five and Mike Stratford returns to the lineup after missing the first two meets with a leg injury.
