Save from SO to OK KALSO EARTH SHOE 103a East Franklin Street above the Hub 929-9553 1 H by Doug Clark Staff Writer The UNC indoor track team will travel to Richmond, Va. Saturday to compete in the East Coast Invitational Track Meet in the Richmond Coliseum. This will be the first competition of the season for the Tar Heels, who ordinarily begin their, schedule at the Catholic Youth Games in College Park, Md. Both meets fall on the same weekend this year, however, so the Heels will concentrate their efforts on the Richmond meet, taking 19 athletes to the event that will attract competitors from most of the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southern Conference teams, as well as from several other Eastern schools. According to Head Track Coach Joe Hilton, the Heels should be stronger than a year ago, despite a lack of depth and the graduation of school record holding and former ACC champion long jumper Sam Beasly. However, NCAA squad limitations have reduced the importance of depth and the long jump will be manned by senior Dennis Quick. Adding to Carolina's season hopes is freshman sprinter Reggie Jones who, according to Graduate Assistant Coach Charles . Foster, gives the Heels a legitimate scoring threat in the ACC 60- . - M y r 1 ; it' :x:v:::x::::Cx;::::::::: yard dash. Jones will compete in that event in Richmond. Jones will also compete in the mile relay along with co-captain Reggie Brown, Chuck Hayes and Will Southerland. Brown and Southerland will double in the two-mile relay with Tommy Ward and Henry Jones. Jones will also compete in the mile run. What's up after college? That question is enough to get a lot of young people down. Air Force ROTC college graduates have that worry, too. But their immediate future (and longer if they choose) is much more secure. As a commissioned officer, there's a good job.... Travel. Graduate level education. Promotions. Financial security. And really, lots more. If you have two academic years remaining, there's a great 2-year AFROTC program still available to you. Look into the details. We think you'll be pleasantly surprised. And pleasantly rewarded. Contact Captain Wilder in Lenoir Hall South or call 3-20742143 Put it all together in Air Force ROTC. 1 Cross-country standouts Ralph King, Dave Hamilton and Kent Taylor will run the two-mile, King in a featured heat, and ACC Football Player of the year M ike Voight will compete in the 60 yard high hurdles with Chris Cox and Chip Wilson. In the field events, Dave Robinson will pole vault, John McCabe, Shannon LeRoy and freshman Irwin Jones will compete in the high jump and Fred Woltz and Quick will triplejump. Quick will also compete in the long jump. The Heels are confident that some new athletes, the addition of world-class hurdler Charles Foster as an assistant coach, and an improved team attitude will make them ACC title contenders, challenging perennial champion Maryland. Some top-flight competition in Richmond this weekend should help determine how realistic these hopes are. Swimmers meet ECU; open winter competition Carolina's swim team, refreshed from its 1 2-day winter training session in North Palm Beach, Fla., hits the water Saturday afternoon at East Carolina University. "This is East Carolina's big meet of the year," UNC Swim Coach Jim Wood said. "We only beat them by three points last year and I expect them to be tapered (rested) and shaved down. They are especially strong in the freestyle events." Both teams will risk their undefeated records as ECU is 3-0 while UNC is 2-0. The Tar Heels' last win was Nov. 25 over Maryland. Wood sees several difficult match-ups. "Of all the races, the 200-meter freestyle and the 200 butterfly should be the closest. In the freestyle, ECU has John Tudor, who is the brother of one of our swimmers and I'm looking for Karl Thiele and Steve McDonald to do well against him. "In the butterfly, they have Steve Ruedlinger and I think he will be given a good race by Alan Toll, Ned Jones and Greg Sanchez," Wood said.., , - --t r. Wood looks' for improvement' in -the spring freestyle and diving events, but mostly he is anxious for a win. Hesaid his swimmers are strong after their Florida workout and should be well prepared for East Carolina. The next home swimming meet is against Wake Forest Jan. 21. Jan. 17. the men visit powerful Tennessee, while the women meet the Volunteers on the 18th. Dave Kirk Club sports This semester, the Daily Tar Heel will begin regular coverage of UNC club sports. A team representative from each club is asked to come by the DTH offices in the Student Union and inform DTH staff reporter Chip Ensslin of schedules and specific plans. This information should be in written form, signed by the representative and including his or her campus address and phone number. The UNC Sports Club Council has urged and invited all interested students to take part in the clubs which are student-financed and operated.
