State's Ed Smith and Howard Johnson were concerned, Friday night was as good a night as any for them to collect their initial wrestling victories of the season for the Wolfpack. The Tack was wrestling old foe Carolina in Raleigh and trying to avenge a 19-15 loss in mid-January to the Tar Heels. State had taken a 9-6 advantage when Smith, w restling 1 58 pounds and Johnson, at 167, took consecutive decisions over Joe Ryan and Carl Hoffman to give the Tack a 15-6 lead the Heels could never offset. The final was State 22, Carolina 9. The match was the Heels' fifth in the last week and that, combined with injuries last week to Chris Conkw right and M ike Benzel, were labeled as two of the main reasons for the Heels' sixth loss in sixteen attempts. "Those four matches earlier in the week, plus two of our top individuals out," UNC Wrestling Coach Bill Lam said, "along with the fact that 1 just didn't get the kids up like 1 should have were the reasons we got beat. I've got to take some of the responsibility for the loss." The loss was the first in Atlantic Coast Conference competition for the Heels, who are now 4-1. Tim'Reaume and Dave Juergens fell before Tar Heel Jeff Reintgen took a 6-2 decision over Joey VVhitehouse to close the State lead to 9-6. Smith then decisioned Ryan and Johnson scored five points early on Hoffman to take a 12-8 win. Lee Pace The UNC men's and women's fencing teams took time out Saturday in Woollen Gym to celebrate their 1 9-8 victory over Texas. It wasn't that the win over the Longhorns was so crucial to UNC's season record, but instead it was important to UNC Head Coach Ron Miller, who chaulked up his 100th dual meet triumph. ... After a short chorus of "Happy Hundredth to You," the teams went back to business and defeated William .and Mary and George Mason College to give Miller a good start on his way to 200 victories. The men's team had little trouble beating William and Mary 16-11 and George Mason 22-5 after their romp over Texas. The UNC women posted an I J-5 win over Texas and defeated William and Mary 13-1. I n the only Atlantic Coast Conference action of the day, the Carolina women soundly whipped Maryland 1 2-4 to extend their unbeaten string to seven and CC record to 5-0. "I thought Allison Barrett, Garney Ingram and Cathy Swan were especially good on the women's team today although everyone fenced well," Miller said. All in all, it was a rather routine day for the Tar Heels as they substituted freely throughout the three matches. William and Mary offered the most competition of the three schools and won 1 1 bouts, mostly over the men's foil team. The U NC men return to ACC competition w hen they travel to Duke Wednesday night. The Tar Heels share first place, now with Maryland as a result of Clemson's 15-1 2 upset of the Terrapins. UNCs record is now 4-3. We really won it on the uneven bars," said UNC Head Coach Ken Ourso after the meet, referring to Terry Lodge's second place and Lynn Swisher's and Paula Kilpatrick's tie for third palce in the event. In vaulting, the event preceding the uneven bars, VPI took a slight lead as they won first and third places. Kilpatrick finished second for Carolina. The balance beam ev ent ended in a near lie between the two teams, so the meet wasn't resolved until the Heels swept the floor exercise. Teresa Trice, Joan Healy, and Swisher took first, second and third, respectively. The final score of 79.45 was a new season high for the women. Almost half the team was competing w ith the flu as much as they were competing w ith the opposition. Trice, Healy, and Mary Dashiell missed last week's practice and hadn't worked out on the balance beam since the last meet. Joan Healy performed all her events while still weak from the flu and won the all around competition. Swisher, the only other Tar Heel in all-around, linished secona. problem disposing of host Clemson Saturday and tallied their sixth win in eight outings, 75-38. The Heels broke out on top early and were never pressured by the Tigers. The meet prepared Carolina for the ACC relays, which begin on Feb. 26. Before the relays, however, the Heels host N.C. State Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Bowman Gray Indoor Pool. The meet will be preceeded by the women's meet at 4. . The Heels had a fine individual performance from Dick Davidson who took a solo win in the 500-yard freestyle, then teamed with Mark List, Karl Thiele and Alan Toll to take the 400 medley relay. Davidson also combined with Chris Murphy, Mark Keating, and Mike Reock to win the 400 freestyle relay. Other winners included Steve McDonald in the 1,000 freestyle, Rich DeSelm in the 200 individual medley, Thiele in the 1 00 freestyle, and Robin Lungaard in the 200 breaststroke.
