whose smirking Queen Meg crowns the
agonized Henry VI in a scene from
Shakespeare's play while Henry's
guards pinion the protesting king.
Someone has wisely offered a mini
comparative study of the work of
Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele;
on the left hand his black chalk and
gouache houses tumble ail about a
landscape, while on the right a
melancholy young woman peers
inquisitively through charcoal eyes,
dainty hands clenched in uneasy repose.
If your enthusiasm for drawing goes
beyond pure abstraction, however, you
won't be dissatisfied by this collection. It
came down at last to the final drawing
that caught .my eye a charcoal and
chalk by one of my favorite engravers,
Gustave Dore. Knights ramped and
prayed in an ambiguous medieval scene
that lacked the clarity of Do re's work
for the Inferno but retained the shady
menace appearing in his studies of
Carlyle's disease-ridden London not
the artist's best or most representative
work, but one worth going out of your
way to see. As is the show.
Depending on your preferences, you
may find too many of these "finished"
pieces and too few sketches that show
drawing as work; there are . many
polished projects intended to highlight

their subjects, but few pieces showing
the effort and careful design that can be
so intriguing in these works of art.
Neither are there many abstractions,
even through the 20th century display
this is not, the exhibit seems to say, a
form congenial to abstract treatment of
line and dimension.
