Concerned citizens complain a lot around election-time that with all those candidates running for all those offices, it's, impossible to weigh all that information and make a rational choice in each race. "Thev all look alike to me," is the lament we most often hear. To help with the dilemma, the Tar Heel will publish a series of political profiles on the candidates for the offices of Governor, Lt. Governor and County Commissioner. The first part of that series is on page 3. Hooking the news America is justly famous for, among other things, her conventions. It seems that the thing to do after one forms any sort of organization, is to get together for a good time. Every group gets into the act, including hookers. Recently Washington D.C. hosted the First World Meeting for Prostitutes. The only problem was that more reporters showed up than prostitutes; you might say there weren't enough hookers to go around. Tar Heel reporter Linda Lowe was getting her share along with everyone else, and her column on page 4 tells the whole sad story. (Note: Amy Anguish is on vacation in the Bahamas this week, and told us she was damned if she was answering any letters from poor tired housewives when she could be having a good time cruising the beaches.) ffaatairas Out of Body, Out of Mind? Blue Harary went to Maine once. His body couldn't make the trip so he left it in Durham and made his journey via OBE, or out-of-body experience. Sound bizarre? It is. OBE's are yet another in a growing number of altered states of consciousness that are being researched by parapsychologists all over the world. Harary claims he has had out-of-body excursions since childhood, when he experienced the sensation of floating over his bed and looking down at his body. Now he studies OBE's and other psi phenomena at Duke Psychical Research Foundation. Read about his travels and his theories on page 6. mm The Ricochet Racket What's the only sport played best by deaf, dumb and blind kids? Exactly. Those steel rimmed quarter-eaters are more profitable an enterprise in some cities than anything but booze and shady ladies. Since Chapel Hill doesn't sell booze (and the ladies are always sunny), you can imagine the mystique and madness connected with the dazzling lights and crashing bells of pinball. Phred Vultee explains the attractions and repulsions of this great sport on pages 12-13. Easy sliders UNC's Summer League baseball team moved into a comfortable lead over the rest of the League after a 3-0 week with a win over Atlantic Christian and a double win over Loutsburg.
