Haas, who is not accepting contributions for his campaign, describes himself as a moderate with liberal leanings. "1 want to continue the line of progress of the Orange County Commissioners. They've made more progress in the past four or five years than ever before," he said. Haas feels it is the wrong time to cut back on services Orange County offers its citizens. "I don't know of any right' time to cut back on human services," he said, and added, "I am. an educator and I will fight for tax dollars for education." Haas opponent Ray said he would campaign on his former record and on the platform of fiscal responsibility. "A dollar worth (of services) for a dollar spent," said the State Utilities Commissioner. Ray said he wasn't in favor of cutting back all of the county's programs, but feels that a closer look needs to be taken at the existing programs. Whitted wants the emphasis on human services continued. "Twa of my opponents think the county is doing too much," he said. He wants to continue the programs while at the same time, maintaining the fiscal integrity of the county. "1 feel good about the last four years and I want to help maintain the momentum and the response in the county," Whitted said. Beyond the demands for monetary recompense, Smith is requesting that she be reappointed to another three year , term with the Religion Department. She is also requesting two years off. a length of time she savs she had to spend conducting research in an effort to maintain her position with the University. Besides President Friday and Chancellor Taylor, Charles Long. Kenan Professor of Religion, is also named in the suit. University officials have a 20-day time period in which to answer the charges filed by Mary Carroll Smith, who maintains that the UNC Grievances Committee recommended her reappointment, which was subsequently refused by Taylor.
