Franklin 929-9553 Volume 83, No. 9 July 29, 1976 Utopia crushed Man-made Utopias rarely survive and the American Stone company has brought this point home again. University students (and otherwise shiftless souls) in search of cool, refreshing waters in which to bathe hot bodies and restore tired spirits no longer have access to the utopia-like atmosphere that had sprung up around the old rock quarry. The quarry was closed Tuesday by American Stone Company officials . . . And closer to home, WCAR has finally received its construction permit and is gearing up for a change to FM broadcasting... For all the details to these and other items, refer to page three. Reagan Reins Left In an unprecedented, unexpected, and, many feel, politically suicidal move Monday, Ronald Reagan named Sen. Richard Schweiker as his running mate if he wins the Republican presidential nomination. Both Ford and Reagan now claim to control enough- delegates to clinch a first- ballot victory at the GOP convention next month in Kansas City. Since that's a mathematical impossibility, someone's lying, and odds are it's Reagan. Otherwise, why would he try to capture a handful of uncommitted Pennsylvania delegates by choosing a liberal Pennsylvania senator as his running mate? See the Editor's analysis on page 4. Babbling Brooks And Crimin' Simon Some critics argue we're entering a Renaissance of the cinema. Some critics just argue. In today's issue we examine the latest offerings from Mel Brooks and Neil Simon. According to our critics, Brooks finally shuts up and has less to say than you thought. Simon, on the other hand, cooks up a mystery w ith more false bottoms than Harry Houdini's trunk. In these days of oppressive inflation, it's pleasant to find such diversity available for the price of five brews. Dorrance To Fill Allen's Cleats Marvin Allen, who has been UNC's only permanent soccer cvach, is stepping down at the end of the 1976 season. He will be replaced by one of his former players, Ansony Dorrance.
