Local restaurants named Lack of compensation cited by student employees July 29, 1975 The Tar Heel 9 by Peter Masterman Staff Writer UNCs legal aid service and the Orange Chatham county legal services have received numerous complaints from university students employed by three Chapel Hill restaurants. The students, most of whom are ex-employes of the establishments, are. charging that they have not been fully compensated for their services. According to the legal aid office the students have named in their complaints Zeuss and Sons located on Henderson St., Poets Corner located in the University Square shopping center and Hector's located downtown on Franklin St. All three restaurants are owned by Pete L. Galifianakis of Washington, D.C. He could not be reached for comment. The legal aid office was unable to release the names of students making the complaints and stated that the office is simply acting as negotiator for the students. According to legal aid representatives, the office's main concern in the matter is to help the students receive their back pay, not to take punitive action against the three establishments. W.A. Booher, spokesman for the N.C. Department of Labor's communication division, said in a telephone interview last Monday that his department had received several complaints about the restaurants and are presently investigating them. The complaints, according to Booher, are that several employees have not received full pay for their work at the restaurants. There have also been complaints of a "laxity in their (restaurants') record keeping." If the Department of Labor can provide substantiation for the complaints then it is possible for them to take the matter to court. Booher added that if the case does go to court, Galifianakis could be sued only for the amount of back pay owed the employees. According to Bonnie Davis, a staff attorney with the legal service, suit has been filed against Galifianakis and his Anospec Corporation which owns Zeus and Sons. ; According to Davis, Zeus and Sons still owes the three ex-employees SI 80, S260 and $98 respectively. All three terminated their employment at Zeus and Sons last May. The suit was filed July 1 2 and is asking for the back pay of the plaintiffs, plus" 6ft interest and payment for the attorney's fee. Davis said that eight or nine other persons came by her office to discuss similar complaints concerning Galifianakis' restaurants, but decided not to take legal action. Coed dies A fall from a ninth floor window in Granville East Towers resulted in the death of a UNC coed late Wednesday morning. Students interviewed at the scene said the death was apparently connected to a letter the girl allegedly received earlier that morning. Authorities were unavailable for comment pending notification of next-of-kin.
