Heels go to Tigertown
for clash with Clem son
by Grant Vosburgh
Sports Editor
Although it seemed so at the time, all is not
lost for the Tar Heel basketball team because
of Wednesday's loss to Wake Forest. A half
game lead such as Wake holds is not sure-fire
insurance for any team in the Atlantic Coast
Conference. But it does put the Deacons in
an awfully enviable position.
Tar Heel fans will have to cheer out of
both corners of their mouths until the
tournament one corner for UNC and the
other for Wake's opponents. And the former
will have to be mighty loud Saturday night
for the Heels to hear anything over the din
that Clemson supporters will make in
Littlejohn Coliseum.
The good people down in Tigertown raise
quite a ruckus when their boys take the
court. And there's no reason that they'll
change their ways before Saturday at 7:30
p.m.
Bill Foster's squad was flying high until
they ran up against a sluggish, poorly
executing Marquette team in the Milwaukee
Classic over Christmas break.
Unfortunately, Clemson happened to be

After a big win in the consolation bracket
of the Classic, the Tigers hit roadblock No. 2
on their travels back down to the Palmetto
State. Carolina humbled the Tigers at
Greensboro on Jan. 5, 91-63.
Since that time, only those darlings from
the twin cities, the Demon Deacons, have
stopped the Foster Express. That came in
Littlejohn Jan. 15, 84-82.
Wayne Rollins, Cordele Ga.'s most
famous 7-foot-2 tree, leads the Tiger attack.
He is averaging over 14 rebounds per game
and 16 points. More importantly, 61.5 per
cent of his field goal attempts find their
target.
While Rollins is the only Clemson player
among ACC rebounding leaders (he leads
the league), he has plenty of company in the
scoring department. Stan Rome, who can
play both guard and forward despite his 6-foot-6
size, is averaging 16.9 points each
outing while Colon Abraham chips in 10.9 in
a reserve role. Derrick Johnson, Greg Coles
and David Brown all add more than eight
points a game.
The Tar Heels have their hands full
Saturday. They'll face an explosive team that
manhandled Maryland a week ago.

North Carolina looks to defeat East Carolina
for the first time in history when wrestlers from the
two schools meet tonight at 8 inGreenyillc, N.C.
UNC Head Coach Bill Lam feels his team has its
"best shot ever" to defeat the Pirates, even though
his Tar Heels are on the road.
"I don't think they're as strong as they were last
year and I think we're stronger," Lam said. "But
they'll have a big crowd down there and it's always
the biggest match of the year for them. It's very
important to us, too."
Carolina owns a 7-3 ledger, with losses to only
Lehigh. Wilkes and Navy. East Carolina's only
two setbacks of the season have come against
Lehigh and Wilkes.
UNC will once again be without sophomores
Dave Juergcns and Dave Casale, still hampered by
injuries. Juergens' absence will move defending
ACC champ Tim Reaume to the 142-pound
division and set up one of the key matches of the
night between Carolina's Chris Conkwright and
ECU's Paul Osmond at 134 pounds. The two
wrestled all through high school, and developed

quite a rivalry. Last year, in ECU's decisive victory
over the Tar Heels, Osmond handled Conkwright
rather easily.
Other Carolina starters include Scott
Conkwright (118) and Jeff Reingten ( 1 50), who've
each lost just one match this year, Joe Galli ( 1 26),
Mike Benzel (158), Dean Brior (167), Charlie
Quaile (177), Norm Walker (190) and Dee
Hardison at heavyweight.
The UNC indoor track team, with three
sprinters from the football team, will face Duke
and N.C. Central University Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
in the Tin Can.
Delbert Powell, Wayne Tucker and Alan
Caldwell will be the new faces to strengthen the
Heels' already strong sprint corps. Powell, an All
ACC kick return specialist will run the 60-yard
dash. Wide receiver Tucker will run the 440 leg of
the distance medley relay. Defensive back
Caldwell will run the 60 and will long jump as well..
Duke has made the trip to Chapel Hill once this
year and was embarrassed by State and the Heels.

"It's a natural rivalry in addition to being
an ACC meet," Dickson said. "They'll be
ready. The men will have to swim better
time than they did against East Carolina to
win."
Last year in Charlottesville, Virginia
shaved and tapered for the Heels " and
defeated UNC for the first time in over
30 years. In the ACC championships,
however, second-place Carolina doubled
third-place Virginia in total points, exacting
revenge for the dual meet loss.
"Last year," Dickson said, "Virginia
placed more emphasis on this meet than on
the nationals; they're as strong as they were
then. We're looking for a good meet."
The Cavalier men are 4-3, having lost to
Clemson and Duke, both of whom partially
shaved for the meet. Their women are 5-1.
UNC's men stand 3-1, while the women are
2-0.
"We're very pleased with our team,"
Virginia Coach Ron Good said. "Our goal
has been to work hard all the way through
the season and to qualify for the nationals.
I'd go 0-1 0 and finish last in the conference if
1 could score points in the nationals.
"1 think the men's meet will be a good
knock-down, drag-out fight, but I've got to
go with Carolina in the women's meet. We've
got some good women swimmers, but
they've got a few more."
ever' at ECU
Coach Joe H ikon said. "The other time they didn't
have all of their distance runners."
According to Hilton, the Blue Devils have a
strong distance corps which will make it a close
meet. NCCU also has a strong balanced team.
"They should do well in the shot put and hurdles,"
Hilton said.
The UNC men's and women's fencing teams
travel to face the Clemson Tigers in Clemson on
Saturday. Carolina's last triumph was a 16-1 1 win
over the same Clemson team.
"Neither team fenced well. We were both flat
' after losses to Penn. They have some tremendous
talent, but they're not deep. They have weak men
in each weapon," UNC Coach Ron Miller said.
Epeeist Tom Killian and foilsman Mark Scott
will not fence because of injuries. Cathy Swan will
probably fence despite ankle trouble.
UNC Coach Ken Ourso faces Carolina's
gymnastics meet with Appalachian State at 3
p.m. Saturday in Carmichael Auditorium with
confidence despite the questionable status of beam
and floor specialist Teresa Trice, and Mary Beth
Elrod, an uneven bars participant.
Junior standout Trice injured her ankle after a
double win over Longwood College and Duke last
week and Elrod is in the infirmary recovering from
the flu.
The Tar Heels have a 2-1 season record after
bouncing back from a half-point loss to Florida in
the season opener to grab the decisive victories
over Duke and Longwood last weekend.
The intramural Department announced
Thursday the extension of the deadline for entry
into the Co-Rec innertube basketball competition.
Any group of three men and three women
including students, faculty, staff and spouses
affiliated with UNC may enter a team until
Monday, Jan. 30, at noon.
The UNC men's and women's bowling teams
return to action Saturday against N.C. Central in
the Carolina Student Union. Both teams are
coming off upset victories over South Carolina
last weekend.
Monday through Friday,
the Daily Tar Heel reaches
over 20,000 people.
