Chickaboom chung chung chickaboom chung chung chickaboom chung chung chung oomp chung CHUNG. That was pretty good, let's speed it up a little bit: chickaboom chungchungchickaboom. . . It may not come across quite right on paper, but that is more or less the sound of two feet clogging. A labor-intensive form of high-energy folk dance, clogging has shuffled into the local spotlight on the 48 feet of the Apple Chill Cloggers (and the two hands of their resident musician). The Cloggers performed at Jimmy Carter's inauguration in January, teaching a routine to 8,000 people at the "World's Largest Square Dance." Fortunately, it hasn't gone to their heads every Tuesday evening they perform the same service for Chapel Hill, although on a much smaller scale. The Tuesday classes have been going on for two years, having started in Woollen Gym and moved to the Great Hall when more and more people began showing up. Up to 100 people, from locations as diverse as Raleigh and Winston-Salem, have attended the sessions on occasion. The classes are divided into three sections: beginners, including the rankest of novices and - 'ri'-'M:'.. fi( if. , - . ,i -. It's people learning how to clog, to participate in thanks to the Apple Chill Cloggers, in the Tuesday night class Washington, D.C. in the Great Hall. The Cloggers were invited by Jimmy Carter those who have the idea but not the rapidfire casual footflick, intermediate, and advanced. The physical effect produced by the class is not unlike running the two-mile with gravel in your Keds. The leader starts with the basic step, the chickaboom, and works his group up through the more bizarre ones the syncopated Eddy, the leg-waving Indian and the Alamo, also known as the Lone Ranger because of its familiar rhythm (have a Lark, have a Lark, have a Lark today...)- Then the students pair up and learn some square-dance moves, such as diving for oysters, digging for Staff photo by Rouse Wilson Inauguration festivities last month in Chung chung chicka boom. t . clams,, and other forms of shellfish pursuit. When some general level of competency has been reached, classes and Cloggers gather in a circle. The time has come to put the newly-acquired knowledge to use. The square dance itself is perhaps an ideal method of gaining information Wing and Marsh in Deep Jonah tonight Steve Wing and Rodney Marsh will perform at 8:30 tonight in Deep Jonah in the basement of the Carolina Union. Their music covers a wide spectrum, including early jazz, swing, bebop, Duke Ellington, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, original music and improvisation. Marsh will play flute, tenor sax and alto sax, as well as a soprano sax from the 1920's that's supposed to be strange looking. Marsh played wind instruments for "The Hard Times Jazz Band," which recently disbanded because of economic troubles. "The Hard Times Jazz Band," which played in the Triangle area for over two years, found that the uniqueness of its music made it hard to sell. Wing formerly played piano and was lead vocalist for "Swing", a mostly-jazz band that started irr . Poughkeepsic, N.Y., in 1975 and eventually toured the Eastern seaboard. Much to the relief of rbving DTH reporters, no one moves around to check your form (which helped kill my brief affair with the waltz). A large number of dancers are flat-out superb, ripping casually through the steps with Olympian stamina and Colombian smiles. The end of the dance finds many prostrate on the floor, and mention of a favored old-time tradition (post-shuffle beer consumption) is well-received. Official President Ron Raxter rani through a brief history of the Apple Chill Cloggers over several chilly ones after the dance. The group evolved from the UNC Clogging Club, taking its new name after the 1975 Apple Chill Fair. Most of its 25 members are still students, and the rest work in the area. The group is registered as a nonprofit North Carolina corporation hence the need for a president in a democratic organization, as Raxter, a law student, explains it. They have performed at numerous folk and old-time festivals (including the Chicago Folk Festival "one of the biggest in the country'" last weekend) in addition to the inauguration of the Georgia Peach. The Apple Chill Cloggers represent a '"hybrid", of traditional and precision dance, Raxter explains. A precision team (of which there were two at the inaugural) is more of a drill team, while the traditional goes for individual emphasis. The Cloggers execute precision moves, but within a traditional improvisational framework. "Our charter lasts perpetually hopefully we will too." commented Raxter as the evening's festivities drew to a close. With a growing reputation in the community and elsewhere, it seems that Chapel Hill's most entertaining corporation will probably do just that. 7:00 : fcnilBiEL 9:30 FrwOHn Sift r I 1 the : ;iYv US seven- jV solution .
