r 'I Will Heels remain afloat vs. Wave? Friday, February 11, 1977 The Dally Tar Heel 5 Remember February 14, 1976? ' You know, dancing at a Valentines party, not really thinking about basketball, or too much else for that matter. Then all of a sudden, someone comes running in with the news that the Heels are in an overtime game with Tulane down in New Orelans. Maybe the party stopped (and maybe it didn't), but anyway the Heels went on to win in four overtimes, 113-106. Saturday night at 8 p.m. the Tar Heels have a return engagement with Tulane in the Greensboro Coliseum. There are about 1,000 tickets remaining. This year the Green Wave returns three starters from the team which had Carolina faas holding" their breath, and also have a new coach. Roy Danforth, former Syracuse coach (Tar Heel fans remember his 1974-75 team), now coaches Tulane after the exit of Charles Moir to Virginia Tech. Tulane is again having a good season, coming off their best season in 27 years. The Green Wave dumped Cincinnati (ranked no. 2 and undefeated at the time) and has done well in the tough Metro-Seven Conference. Tulane lost to both Georgia Tech and Virginia in New Orleans, and thus some Tar H eel fans aren't as worried as they should be. ' Center Jeff Cummings is Tulane's top returner form last season. Along with 6-foot-6 Arthur Bibbs, 6-foot-l 1 Terry McLean and 6-foot-9 Richard Purtz, Cummings should give the smaller Heels trouble under the boards. ' UNC has been led in its last three games by senior forward Walter Davis. The Pineville, N.C. native has scored at least 25 points in each of these games, and was credited with 12 rebounds against the Terps. Kevin Barris Sportshorts Track, wrestling teams journey to S With three of its best distance runners headed elsewhere for the limelight, the UNC indoor track team should still provide a strong showing in the N.C. State Invitational at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. in Raleigh. In its final tune-up for the Atlantic Coast Conference meet set next week in College Park, Md., Carolina will be without the services of Ralph King, Willie Southerland and Kent Taylor. Sprinter Steve Coleman, who was recently injured, will not see action the remainder of the season. Chip Wilson may or may not be ready for the weekend. Alan Caldwell is also ailing with a sore leg, and may not participate. East Carolina, North Carolina Central, Furman, Duke arid Wake Forest will participate along with State and Carolina. A women's meet had been tentatively scheduled with the Wolfpack, but it has been canceled because of sickness and injury to both squads. Carolina puts its Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling lead on the line Saturday when the Tar Heels venture to Reynolds Coliseum for the second match of the season with N.C. State. Match time is 7:30 p.m. UNC is 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the conference. State is 3-1 in ACC dual matches. Coming off a split with Towson College and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, the U NC gymnastics team seeks to up its record to 5-2 when it takes on Madison College at 7 p.m. tonight in Harrisonburg, Va. Joan Healy is a questionable starter for tonight's meet, but beam and floor specialist Teresa Trice should be on better footing against Madison than she was last week when she favored a recovering sprained ankle. The North Carolina fencing team puts its 4-0 conference record on the line Sunday when thesMaryland Terrapins visit Chapel Hill. The meet begins at 10 a.m. in Carmichael Auditorium. The women's A and B team's will also fence Sunday. Maryland's women lost to UNC twice last year, both times 12-4. opooooooooooooooooooooooo o o o O O d o o o o o o o o Phone: 942-7032 or 942-7128 . The Tar Heels, who won the event last year, move to the consolation semifinals at 1 1 a.m. today against the loser of the Mary land-Wake Forest game, which followed the UNC-UVa contest. "This is the most important win in the short history of women's basketball here," Virginia Coach Dan Bonner said after the game. "UNC is one of the best teams around, and it is really a pleasure to beat them. Carolina led at the half 30-28. After Virginia moved out to a 48-39 lead, the Tar Heels came back to take a 53-52 lead on Mika Long's 22 footer with 8:04 left.
