Kuralt
Continued from page 1 .
cables and cameras and a refrigerator for my
beer," Kuralt said in the slow, deep measured
tones of a voice familiar to television
viewers.
But for Kuralt, the visit to Chapel Hill was
personal as well as professional. Before he
joined CBS News almost 20 years ago,
Kuralt, a native of Charlotte, went to school
at UNC and got his start as a staff writer and
later editor of the Daily Tar Heel.
K uralt recalled that he got his degree later
than most students. "The main reason I
didn't get my degree on time at UNC was
because 1 was editor of the Daily Tar Heel in
lieu of going to class" he said.
Kuralt also had problems passing the
required swimming test. "It is true that I had'
to repeat swimming. But I was a hell of an
intramural third baseman," he said.
For one of his years at UNC Kuralt lived
in Battle Hall, which was then a dormitory,
in a room which was once occupied by
another famous Carolina alumnus, Tom
Wolfe.
Wolfe was a favorite author on campus
when Kuralt was a student here. "One has to
read Wolfe at about 16 to get the full effect,"
he said.
Kuralt's relatives still live in North
Carolina. His parents have now retired and
moved from Charlotte to Kitty Hawk, and
his brother Wallace owns the Intimate
Bookshop and still lives in Carrboro.
"He did what all of us always wanted to
do to stay in Chapel Hill," Kuralt said.
