in Carmichael
The UNC fencing team meets
conference competitor Duke tonight in
Carmichael Auditorium in the last
home dual meet of the season.
Carolina fenced the Blue Devils
earlier this season in Durham, blasting
them 22-5. "The hardest thing will be
getting up, taking them seriously," UNC.
Coach Ron Miller said.
The women's team will also face
Duke.
"They're . improving constantly,"
Miller said. "It varies from meet to meet
who fences best."

For Mika Long, it will come to an end
all too soon.
Long came to UNC with an ambition
to study, having no plans to play,
basketball here, despite three years of
all-conference performances in high
school near Monroe. But after two
years, she did decide to try out. She not
only made the team, but has become co
captain and starting guard in this, her
senior season. Earlier this week, she
reflected on her decisions."
"I didn't think 1 was good enough to
play on the college level," she said. "1
just had a lack of confidence. 1 thought

Long did find time to play in the
intramural basketball program and to
attend some of the women's varsity
games during her f xst two years, and she
also played in the band. But something
important was missing.

missed basketball a lot, and a friend of

elTort is a necessity for Long, one of the
slower players on the team.
"1 just enjoy playing." she said. "The
desire comes natural. I try to make up
for my slowness by not giving up on the
loose ball."
Long's biggest help to the team comes
when the opposition plays a one
defense, allowing her to show off her
outside shooting touch, especially from
the corners. That touch also shows
through in her free-throw shooting. Her
83 per cent-figure leads the team by a
wide margin.
Saturday night. Long and fellow co
captain Cathey Daniels will be making
their last game appearances in
Carmichael Auditorium against N.CY
State. After, the season. Long plans to
work on. completing her major in
political science and hopes to attend
criminology graduate school at Sam
Houston, Eastern Kentucky or South
Carolina.
1 doubt if I'll ever play competitively
again." she said. "I'd fove to coach on
the college level while studying for my
doctor's degree, but that might not work
out. 1 just wish I had two more years to
play."
UNC swimmers lose to Wolfpack
The UNC swimmers were dealt twin setbacks in Raleigh by the N.C. State Wolfpack, the
men losing 92-21 and the women 79-51.
State captured first place in every event en route to the lopsided victory over the UNC men
(4-3). The Pack's Dan Harrigan, an Olympic bronze medalist at Montreal, set a new ACC
record in the 1000 freestyle and added a pool record in the 200 backstroke. -
The best U NC performance was Mark List's second-place finish in the 200 backstroke. H is
time was just over that needed to qualify for the nationals.
Bright spots for UNC women (5-1) were triple firsts by Penny Brown and Ann Marshall.
Brown won the 50 and 100 free as well as the 100 individual medley. Marshall won the 200
and 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
