Benny
Peterson
Benny's Birthday. . .Grimes residents
celebrated Jack Benny's birthday last week in an
annual event. The party was held on the day after
Benny's birthday, which is Feb. 14. "We didn't
want it confused with the minor holiday that falls
on his birthday,". Grimes President Bill Peterson
said.
About 20 Benny fans attended the party, which
featured a birthday cake inscribed with "Happy
Birthday Jack" and topped with 39 candles. "We
had PJ too; that was the selling point," Peterson
said.
Many of the party attenders enjoyed imitating
Benny's characteristics. "Everyone there was in
the true Jack Benny spirit. When I tried to take up
contributions for the cake and the PJ, everyone
became very stingy," Peterson said.
Peterson has been a Benny fan from way back.
"The first word 1 ever spoke was... Well!"
Peterson also watched Benny on many talk shows
and the like. "Every time I watched him on TV,
without even realizing -it, 1 picked up his
mannerisms. I even started walking like him, until
I got tired of getting beat up."
Some people may find celebrating Jack Benny's
birthday two years after his death somewhat
morbid. "That's an even better reason to celebrate
his birthday, so people won't forget about him."
Sanford
"There is absolutely no chance that you
can change my mind about the
appropriateness of my participation as a
board member. If people like me could be
badgered into resigning from corporate
boards, who would take their places?"
Fick said the RAU then decided to
arrange a public forum where Sanford could
respond to questions raised in the petition.
"He has unconditionally refused, saying the
matter is resolved," Fick said.
Fick said it was reported in the Chronicle
that Sanford would not participate in the
forum, but was willing to meet with the RAU
privately to discuss the issues. RAU
representatives were scheduled to meet with

Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras Beads... Three UNC students
journeyed to New Orleans last week to join in the
celebration of Mardi Gras and to collect as many
strands of beads as they could.
Rusty Gelfand and Doug Fisher had planned
since January to attend the annual festival, and
Dan Nobles called at midnight the night before the
trip to beg a ride.
The tradition of throwing beads from the floats
during the Mardi Gras parades began, according
to- Fisher, 7 with the pirates that often roved
through New Orleans hundreds of years ago. "The
bead throwing began with the pirates who came
through "New Orleans throwing out jewels to
placate the citizens, supposedly."
The three students, along with many other
university students and revelers, caught beads
thrown by Doc Severinson, Wolfman Jack and
Gino Vanelli. "My hand was stepped on about 10
times grabbing beads. Everybody's really drunk
and rowdy," Gelfand said.
Having a lot of beads is a status symbol in New
Orleans and can prove valuable, according to
Nobles. The person with the most beads can trade
them in for other items.
The group came back with about 50 different
kinds of beads, after giving away many strands to
girls at Kentucky Fried Chicken joints and friends

Sanford Feb. 24.
ASDU president Kyle Citrynell said that
because the student body legislation has
supported the forum, she would continue to
press Sanford for his compliance.
Is Fick disappointed with the results of the
RAU?
"I'm disappointed, but ,it shows how
corporations and people involved with
corporations must be responsible to the
public," he said. "Mr. Sanford made a big
thing about being a moral voice and a social
conscience on the board and trying to
influence ITT's public responsibility;
however, Mr. Sanford has been very
unresponsive to his own public."

Life is Futile. . .The members of Pi Futile Phi
sorority have no house, pledge formals or mixers.
Instead, they exist quietly on First East Cobb and
contemplate the futility of it all.
"It all started three years ago during exams,"
said one member who thinks names are futile. "We
were sitting around thinking how futile exams are,
how futile school is and how futile we are." Since
then, the sorority has sponsored a number of futile
events, including the first and last performance of
the "Flying Futilas" on the transom of 1 12 Cobb.
Last year, the sorority banded together to fend
off the "Mass Murderer" after psychic Jeane
Dixon predicted a mass murder on a college
campus. "But he never showed up," said another
member. "I guess even mass murdereres don't care
about a futile bunch like us."
Pi Futile Phi's creed reflects their attitude: Life
is futile. Life's a bitch. None of us will, ever get

Thursday with the Campus Governing Council
rc,c Flections Board requesting another special
electfon .for the District 7 CGC seat.
Wirwicz lost to Diane Schafer by three votes in
a special election Wednesday. He is asking for this
special election because of voting discrepancies.
Eight more ballots were cast m the special
election Feb. 23 than there were people registered
to vote in the district. Also, nine graduate students
voted in the election, which was restricted to
undergraduate students. '
If held, this would be the second special election
between Schafer and Wirwicz. The first was held
Feb. 23 after 1 1 Granville residents voted in the
wrong district Feb. 9.
Elections Board Chairperson Craig Brown said
Thursday a special' election probably would be
held because the discrepancies could have
influenced the results- '
