6 Daily Tat Heel .'Friday. March 18. 1977 'Rumours ' spreads talen i thin By ELLIOTT POTTER City and Stale Editor 1 1 has been two years since the new wave of Fleetwood Mac fanaticism was aroused by the group's platinum album Fleetwood Mac. The devotees don't seem to be disappointed in the British-American group's newest effort. Rumours. . . Warner Brothers claims it is shipping more copies of Rumours than any other album it has ever marketed such are the tastes of the nondiscriminating American customer. Fleetwood Mac has said most of the cuts from the album were written about lovers' quarrels between group members Stevie Nicks and 'Lindsey Buckingham, and Christine and John McVie. Their problems have leaked into the recording studio. The group's strengths long have been the bass work of John McVie, the percussions of Mick Fleetwood, and harmonies of assorted journeymen vocalists. McVie's bass makes "The Chain" a success and Fleetwood's percussions are particularly sparking in an otherwise lackluster "Gold Dust Woman." The harmonies make "Go Your Own Way" a rarity among rock songs a "Top 40" hit that also may be the best song on the album. is X f 1 it fx Staff photo by Aden Jrnigan Rumours would be a success if the group relied more on these qualities and the golden throat of Christine McVie instead of spreading solo performances among group members. The voices of Nicks and Buckingham rarely can be depended on to carry the lead successfully through an entire cut, and therein lies the fault of many of the songs on the album. There are exceptions to these shortcomings Nicks does a commendable job on "Dreams." Her performance of "Rhiannon" on Fleetwood Mac is awesome, and her concert version of the song is bewitching. The exceptions in Buckingham's case are . less apparent. His voice suffers from a lack of distinction a quality Nicks' voice has in excess. v The only good aspect of "Second Hand News" is brevity. (It lasts a painful 2 minutes and 43 seconds.) Throughout the song, Buckingham rattles off a string of syllables that sound quite similar to imitations of machine guns frequently heard on kindergarten playgrounds. Silence would have been a successful replacement. Rumours does not hu:. of commercialism. Both the lyrics and performances seem genuine Fleetwood Mac has not lost that quality. When the group features Rumours' cuts in their performance in Greensboro Saturday night, the crowd should love every song. Their concert performances are dependably brilliant. In "Dreams," Nicks writes, "And what you lost And what you had And what you lost." Fleetwood Mac may have lost something in Rumours but they had more than most groups and they've got some left. - -x I I tM NAME 15 MHO, OKA1, MitO,0U WANT JU5TMLP CHARLES l) ANP 1 NEEP50ME HELP UJlTMVOUi? "AND MUCH STUDY IS A WEARINESS OF THE FLESH. LET US HEAR THE CONCLUSION OF THE WHOLE MATTER: FEAR GOD, AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS: FOR THIS IS THE WHOLE DUTY OF MAN. FOR GOD SHALL BRING EVERY WORK INTO JUDGEMENT, WITH EVERY SECRET THING, WHETHER IT BE GOOD, OR WHETHER IT BE EVIL! Eccleslastes 12:12-14. Whoever shall undertake to write a history of the families that fear not God not regard the duties they owe to man, but live and riot on the miseries of their kind, will portray to the world an awfully instructive chapter of the retributive justice of God. Many a family started out in life and formed a family connection under the most auspicious circumstances. They were industrious, enterprising, frugal and seem to have started fair for domestic peace and a happy competence. Yet in an evil hour they yielded to the delusive bait of temptation they were in haste to be rich. They turned aside from the quiet paths of a honest industry and domestic tranquility and plunged into a dissipating and iniquitious business, which, while it seemed to promise wealth and future independence, it was but the sure precursor to ruin and disgrace; or the same ruinous result was arrived at no less effectively by the violation of The Holy Day! How awfully, in the history of families, is the truth sometimes Illustrated that God will "POUR OUT HIS FURY UPON THE FAMILIES THAT CALL NOT ON HIS NAME." "THEY THAT DESPISE ME SHALL BE LIGHTLY ESTEEMED." Examples crowd upon us from every quarter: Every neighborhood furnishes them!" In Numbers 32:23 God says: "BE SURE YOUR SINS WILL FIND YOU OUT!" In Deuteronomy 32:29 God says: "O THAT THEY WOULD CONSIDER THEIR LATTER END!" "Sin is any want of conformity unto, or transgression of The Law of God!" We now quote God's Second Commandment as found in Exodus 20:4-6: "THOU SHALT NOT MAKE UNTO THEE ANY GRAVEN IMAGE, OR ANY LIKENESS OF ANYTHING THAT IS IN THE HEAVEN ABOVE, OR THAT IS IN THE EARTH BENEATH, OR THAT IS IN THE WATER UNDER THE EARTH: THOU SHALT NOT BOW DOWN THYSELF TO THEM. NOR SERVE THEM: FOR I THE LORD THY GOD AM A JEALOUS GOD, VISITING THE INIQUITY OF THE FATHERS UPON THE CHILDREN UNTO THE THIRD AND FOURTH GENERATION OF THEM THAT HATE ME: AND SHOWING MERCY UNTO THOUSANDS OF THEM THAT LOVE ME, AND KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS." Yes, The God of The Old Testament is JEALOUS GOD! Says So Himself In this Commandment! Also in Exodus 34:14: "FOR THOU SHALT WORSHIP NO OTHER GOD: FOR THE LORD, WHOSE NAME IS JEALOUS, IS A JEALOUS GOD." AND AGAIN IN DEUTERONOMY 4:24: "FOR THE LORD THY GOD IS A CONSUMING FIRE, EVEN A JEALOUS GOD!" Yes, The God of The New Testament is a JEALOUS GOD! Jesus Christ said: "I AND MY FATHER ARE ONE!" And "BEFORE ABRAHAM WAS, I AM!" Even the same as God revealed Himself to Moses at The Burning Bush. In Malachi 3:6 God says: "I CHANGE NOT!" Don't stay in His Church and try to change Him! It were better that a mill stone were hung about your neck and you were drowned in the sea! Do not expect the parties to agree who strive to preserve the lives of murderers, rapists, traitors, etc., etc. "BE SURE YOUR SIN WILL FIND YOU OUT O.THATTHEY WOULD CONSIDER THEIR LATTER END!" Often indeed is the peace and comfort of families blighted, children prove profligate and prodigal, and a series of un toward circumstances blast their prosperity; when if you were permitted to read their history, you would find that sin lay at the door some conjugal unfaithfulness some previous marriage contract unfilled some plighted faith violated some youthful trifling with affections some grievlous Indiscretion and guilt to be atoned for. The his tories of families not frequently furnish the most melancholy Illustrations that family sins are visited by family afflictions, defections in parental restraint, by the insubordination and licentiousness of children, and extravagance, Intemperance, or skepticism of parents; by immorality and profligacy in children. . . , Surely by this time those who read this Column have learned the "heathen" are those who set themselves against the Commandments of God Almighty and His Anointed, The Lord Jesus Christ; and that all the heathen are not in the far away places and Jungles. Several times friends with the desire to be helpful have suggested a change in the name of this Column. Wonder If unconsciously they too result the negative of God s "THOU SHALT NOT!" What use have you for a servant that won't carry out orders? "WHY CALL YE ME LORD, LORD, AND DO NOT THE THINGS WHICH 1 SAY" Luke 6:46. True Faith follows after Perfect Obedience.
