4 The Daily Tar Heel Tuesday. April 5. 1977
Women rained out,
meet Devils today
This is it. The big one. It's for North Carolina bragging rights, and
it's the unofficial state dual-match championship. Carolina vs. Duke
in women's tennis. What more can be said?
At 2 p.m. today in Durham, the first serves will be taken, and
sometime tonight the pre-tournament favorite for the North
Carolina state tourney will have been determined.
In my mind, it's the most important match of the year," UNC
Coach Kitty Harrison said. "Simply because we're such rivals and
they're (Duke) such a strong team."
Harrison's squad got an extra day of practice Monday when a
scheduled match with Wake Forest in Winston-Salem was rained
out. It only can help the Tar Heels, for they face a team which has
beaten Yale and Princeton, both of whom defeated UNC this spring.
All the singles matches promise to be exciting, but the highlight
will be on court one where three-time state singles champion Cindy
Johnson of Duke will face Carolina's Susie Black.
UNC's other singles players will be Nina Cloaninger, Rebecca
Garcia, Lisa Dodson, Hunter Dortch and Janet Shands. Besides
Johnson, Duke is expected to counter with Emily Waugh, Erin Wolf,
Kathy Stearns, Theresa Donahue and Beth Brondes.

baseball team continues its hunt for the
Atlantic Coast Conference title today at
Wake Forest in a 3 p.m. game.
The Demon Deacons, who own a .296
team batting average as compared to UNC's
.261 and have a 15-9 record this spring (the
same as UNC), are expected to be very tough
on their home field.
The Tar Heels will have to do it with
sophomore Greg Norris on the mound and
without Bernie Menapace at first base.

Bill Dooley and baseball coach Walter

The UNC women's softball team will host
N.C. State today at 2 p.m. on Hinton James

"State is a strong, quick team," Hunter
said. "They have good place-hitters, fast
reactions, precise fielders and are very
intelligent."
