It was a plot straight out of "Fonzie Loves Pinkie," minus the motorcycles; even all the Italian names sounded alike. But somewhere between the courting, sparking and vocal aeronautics, L'Ormindo developed from an amusing bit of froth into a substantial piece of delightful nonsense (like a cupcake growing into a Viennese torte). The action centered around the very young queen of aging King Ariadeno. Erisbe (Rochelle Travis), with a fresh-peach exterior that won the devotion of rival lovers Ormindo and Amida, was a marvelous foil to her innocent-but-deliberate suductiveness and scheming, airy little brain. Four hundred years later, she would have been a cheerleader juggling prom dates. Ormindo (Jim Croom), the hero along with Amida (Michael Johnson) contend for Erisbe's affections. Ormindo could have represented none other than the Captain of the varsity football squad blond, clean-cut, and heroically tenored. Amida, on the other hand, was the president of the Forensics team a suave intellectual and often sardonic baritone with a past. Having dated and subsequently jilted the Princess Side (Melanie Myers) who was obviously a candidate for Chairman of the Philosophy Club, Amida decided that he had had enough of that strong and sensitive character, and so set off to pursue some fluff. For a while, it appeared that Erisbe was going to go to the dance with both of them. However, through the efforts of some wonderfully tacky "Egyptian fortune-tellers", (really the servants of Side), Erisbe finally convinced herself of Amida's infidelity. She choose to follow Ormindo to battle (he had recently been drafted), and ran off with him while Amida had meanwhile gotten re-pinned to Side. In the end of course. King Ariadeno found out and VI. Ariadeno repented in time, the lovers awakened intact and, in general, everyone went out singing. ' The performance of each actor was Baroquely excellent. Croom as Ormindo practically radiated from his blue eyes down to the tip of his wooden sword. His voice, clear and supple, blended particularly well in the several duets he sang throughout the opera. With Travis as Erisbe, their shared declaration of love at the end of Act One achieved a fluidity and harmony. Travis herself won laurels not only for the sweetness and assurance of her own voice, but because never before has anyone so perfectly Intramurals under seven minutes. Myers, whether as Egyptian or regal princess, evinced a depth of feeling and richness of emotion unmatched in L'Ormindo. Her Act One lamentation for Amida's lost love subtly mixed petulance, anger, wistfulness and sorrow with a smooth mezzo voice that more than compensated for a slight unnaturalness in her gestures. As the Forensics type, Johnson oozed that politician savoir-faire admirably in Act One (the sideways smirk really clinched it). The contrast between this polish and the abrupt emotionalism of his reconciliation with Side was both believeable and touching (it was also This Wednesday, the feature race is the two-mile, and a large field is expected. Roland Rust looks to be the favorite after a strong performance in the 5,000 meters. Rust ran the distance in 14:55 and had a three-mile mark of 14:25. Light touches came twinkling in from Nerillo (Beth Lawrence), Amida's page, and a sort of Italianate Puck, who leapt and warbled nimbly around the room, occasionally yelling at the pianist. Erisbe's maid, Mirinda (Joyce Peck), treated the audience to a vocal Halloween in her solo about love. Her cackling, foghorning and pulling her eyelids around were the personification of great comic flair and mezzo magic. Joel Carter, in his role as King Ariadeno, lent a solid baritone and a regal air to this confusion of affections. Noble and cuckolded, he too executed an effective series of emotional transitions. But for sheer masquerade, the "fortune-tellers' took the Viennese torte. Garbed in gaudy Mesopotamian-type clothes, Erice and.Melide (Phil Robertson and Linda Pristera) wooed, fork tongued and palm-read their way past Amida's and Erisbe's defenses to get all the right people paired up with one another. Erice might as well have been sporting snake oil his incantations at the cave could have . convinced the entire audience that it was a six-foot white rabbit. His Act One solo exhibited a voice curiously nasal, but true to pitch and slick, character. Melide was uniformly unobtrusive, coming out of her Mediterranean shell long enough for a commentary on love and life in surprisingly vigorous character. While missing a certain flexibility in her vocal rendition, her energy and the rose between her teeth were worth their weight in soaring notes. Thus, while Ormindo and Erisbe did not ride off into the sunset to share a malted at Hamburger Heaven, and Amida and Side did not retire to a corner to play three-dimensional chess, everything nonetheless ended happily, and no one got left at home on Prom Night (except Ariadeno, and it was good for him). All in all, L'Ormindo was a Baroque success from the word vivace, and it didn't hurt that Erice kissed the reviewer on his way out of Act One, Scene Two. Continued from page 4. The meet yvill begin at 5:45 p.m. on Fetzer Field with events in the 100-yard dash, 220 yard race, high jump and shot put, as well as the two-mile race.
