Ths results are in keeping with last October's News and Observer poll, which showed an incredible 76.! per cent in favor of mixed drinks. But the results were certainly not in keeping with the 1973 referendum on liquor by the drink a landslide victory for the dry forces in the state. Explaining the apparent reversal of opinion is not easy. It may be that the dry forces were more organized in 1973 in getting their supporters out to the polls. Maybe the continuous battle over liquor by the drink has changed some minds. Whatever the explanation, this new reading of public opinion is good news for the pro-liquor legislators in the state who make up a vocal minority in Rajeigh. Buoyed by the UNC poll, pro-liquor legislators, who held a strategy session last week, are hoping to push the local option through the legislature this year. If such a bill does not pass, the UNC poll shows that many of the legislators voting against it will have trouble gaining re-election next time around. .. This is good news for the state, which is one of only two in the nation (along with Oklahoma) which bans mixing drinks behind the bar. The time for liquor by the drink, it seems, has finally come. It may not be this year, but it will be soon. The taste of liquor by the drink will not only be welcome to North Carolinians who don't always want to buy a fifth, but even more so to those in the tourist and entertainment businesses who have long suffered from brown-bagging laws. Nightriders go, racism stays - The days of the nightriders of the Ku Klux Klan are gone now. Fortunately, our generation can only read of the times when hooded figures on horseback terrorized black households, threatening members with violence if they did not leave the area. Often the threats were carried out and blacks were hanged from the nearest limb all this to accomplish the K K K's warped goal of making America "pure." The power and the influence of the KKK. have dropped off over the last 20 years, and outrageous acts, including murder, that often went unpunished, have rarely occurred in the lifetimes of most students here. But incredibly enough, signs of severe racism still continue to surface today, most recently on our campus. The bigotry manifested itself last week when members of the Black Student Movement received letters threatening that "in the next few weeks you will be beaten on, raped, cut up and other nice things. The letter is purported to be from the "KKK of UNC." This letter is not an isolated incident involving only one or two persons, according to many members of the BSM. Bigotry showed its ugly face in another way last week when blacks returning from a Campus Governing Council meeting were bombarded with water as they walked past a dorm. Perhaps the water-bombing was the work of the KKK of UlIC" or maybe the cowardly act of just one person, but the implications are the same. The racism that many felt disappeared with the days of the nightriders still exists today. And it was not necessarily the CGC meeting (at which the BSM asked for more money for Black Ink) that inspired the physical and verbal abuse. Blacks have suffered this degradation at various times during the year. Last week, however, the temptation was apparently too much for frustrated bigots when they saw the BSM asking for a bigger chunk of student fees from the CGC. The "KKK of UNC obviously does not represent the majority of students on this campus who are interested in working toward racial equality and harmony. And though race relations have improved immensely since the 1950s, incidents like those last week show we still have a lot of work yet to be done. ' By ALISON CANOLES Editor's Note: This is the second part of a two-part series examing rape and rape prevention. Today's column focuses on protective methods suggested by Frederic Storaska, founder of the National Organization for the Prevention of Rape and Assaults. .' Screaming, struggling, carrying weapons or simply relaxing and enjoying it (if such a thing were possible) are all wrong ways to behave in a rape situation, Storaska says. Only in the rare circumstance when a woman finds herself in immediate danger of her life or severe bodily harm should she fight, he says. Since Storaska began lecturing about his methods, his program has prevented serious assault or saved lives in more than 275 cases, hs asserts. . .-v "L'.-., According to his method, if you find yourself in a rape situation: Don't antagonize. If you scream, fight or hit, chances are that your attacker will explode. One rapist, as reported in Life magwtoe, said. "One time I threw this ; woman down and she Started flailing and hit me in ths face. 1 went haywire, really wild. 1 ' wanted to tear her apart, kill her. I caught rnysdf In iimc but 1 kcPt thinking, A broad hit me. a broad!' " Don't icresm. Unless you are 100 per cent sure someone will hear and will help you, don't scream. After all. about 30 people Hsrcl Kitty Genovese's screams and no one crns to help, penovese was attacked in cTcoklyn. N.Y.. near several apartment L:ijir . Although she screamed, and r.'-'hc'ird her scream, no one came to her (3M Mtt '84th Year of Editorial Freedom p sftuMion assistance until it was too late. Don't struggle. If a woman struggles, the man's sexual arousal time is likely to drop to between five and ten seconds, as compared with the usual three to five minutes. Some rapists cannot get an erection unless their victims are struggling. Dpn't rely on your own physical strength or self-defense courses. One rapist, who was infuriated, that women were studying karate at the local YWCA, waited outside the building, waylaid one of the students, raped her and then beat her up karate style. Don't cry, plead or make small talk. The rapist is emotionally unstable, but he is not stupid. Don't surrender totally and passively. Instead, keep in mind five principles which have worked in situations where the assailant accosted a woman, announced or demonstrated his intentions to rape and beat her up, and then did neither. Keep your cool. Of course, you'll be afraid and it isn't a bad idea to let him know you're afraid. Just don't become hysterical. One woman who let her fear be known avoided being raped and severely beaten. Her attacker said later, "I grabbed her from behind and turned her around and pushed her against the wall. She didn't have much chance to get away from me. She tried. I pulled her back and .hit her several times in the face quite hard, and she stopped resisting and she said. 'All right, just don't hurt me. All of a sudden, a thought came into my head... this woman is a human being. I came to my senses and saw that I was hurting this woman, that a person was involved, that it was not an actress in a movie. . ." . Treat the rapist as a human being. ' This week marks a special occasion in the lives of over 3,509 Carolina undergraduates and graduate students it is their last week of classes at tnis great institution,.. .To commemorate this great event arid to ease the pain of sentimental departures, the Officers of the Class of 1977 in cooperation with the Carolina Union, the Interfratcrnity Council. Panhellenic Council, Easter Seals and several local bars have put together Senior Week: an opportunity for the graduating class to indulge themselves in the pleasures of the Ideal World one last time. This week is only four school days long, and into those days we have crammed various activities where all students can honor our school's seniors. The celebration begins on Monday, April 25th at 2: 15 p.m. in front of the Student Stores where we will have a party in the Pit. Music will be am you m pick up Breach of common courtesy To the editor: Thursday night in Gerrard Hall, a private ceremony was held by the Dialectic and Philanthropic Literary Societies to honpr Senator Samuel J. Ervin Jr. for his years of distinguished public service in the state and nation. As he is an alumnus of the Dialectic Society, admittance was restricted to the members of the Societies, other alumni and specially invited guests. In no way was the ceremony intended as a public function, and equally in no way was it intended as a blanket approbation of any particular policy. The honor was for Sam Ervin's long record of contributions, from the organization that knew him as an undergraduate at UNC. Members of the AWS, CGA and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom were obviously either misinformed as to the nature of the occasion, or they misinterpreted the Di-Phi's intentions in presenting the program. It is evident to anyone with a degree of rationality that the Di-Phi is not a sexist organization (having had women members since the 1930's and women presidents since the 1950s), nor did its tribute to Ervin represent a concurrence with his position on . the ERA. Sen. Ervin was retired from public office at the time of his controversial speech against the ERA, and as the Di-Phi was plainly not commemorating his opinions as a private citizen, any demonstration was out of order in the first place. However, no one contended the protesters right to freedom of speech; no one 2 . ? 4 i - f ? 3 M. m '.' ft l , Wfl Iffi ... l t " I If l V IS i ft f t4ir II Ik, 7HV A ru W ni l I t ! to prevent serious assault act like one. One women who gave her attacker a sympathetic ear and avoided rape learned that the man was a college student who had a 4.0 average until his last semester, when he flunked all of his courses. Between his seventh and eighth semesters, he had come home to discover that his entire family had been killed in an auto accident. Gain his confidence. For your own safety, you have to ease his fears. Go along with what he tells you to do, until you can react safely. At the moment you feel you can react, use every ounce of imagination and good judgment you can muster. Two women who were being followed by two men decided that the best way to avoid an attack was to turn them off sexually, so they pretended to be lesbians and began kissing each other and holding hands. The men turned and began walking in the opposite direction. Another woman avoided rape by jumping down on all fours, babbling insanely and eating handfuls of grass. If you can't pull off a routine such as this, don't try, The rapist will suspect you're faking and will probably make you pay for your little act dearly. U nderstandably. many women will make mistakes, lose their cool, scream and struggle. If you do hit or scream at first, apologize profusely: "I'm sorry. I was just so startled." What you are going to need most is time to think so you can act rationally. Act dazed (if you aren't already), go limp or fake a faint. (If you really faint, you'll be unable to control the situation further and may only infuriate your attacker). One. woman was attacked while walking down a street, thrown into an alley and hit her head on the' side of a building accidentally, drawing a little blood. Then she supplied courtesy of Blaine Smith, Mike Key and (the DTK's own) Grant Vosburgh. But the raucous display on Thursday night was a flagrant abuse of free speech, the drowning out of the guest speakers an infringement on t he right of citizens to meet and be heard and the wrongful insistence on being admitted to the hall a blatant breach of common courtesy. There is no other way to put it. They were inexcusably rude and probably did more to damage the cause of the ERA in the minds of those assembled then anything that Sam Ervin ever would doi . The demonstrators completely overstepped the bounds of "peaceable chanting" as the DTH stated it. Shouting " through the open windows at the top of their lungs and bursting into the hall at the close of ' the meeting was' not only outrageously impolite to a non-political and private gathering, but the indiscriminate disturbance disrupted not only Ervin, but a proponent of the ERA, Mr. Albert Coates. Evidently, the members of the protesting groups exercised not the slightest particle of judgment or taste and, to my mind, have seriously damaged their reputations as constructive organizations. r Had I not already been strongly in favor of the ERA (despite such disgustingly mindless militancy on the part of such people), Thursday evening's occurrence would certainly have swayed my opinion against it. 1 must add, with regret, that I certainly would have expected more diplomacy and respect for the rights of others from these people whose primary concern is human . rights. 1 am sorry to see the AWS, CGA and Women's International League take such a giant step backward. fell down. She wasn't really hurt, but her assailant stood over her and said. "Oh my God, I've killed her," then darted out of the" alley and ran down the street. 1 Do nothing that can harm you, but don't stop thinking. If he is pushing you down, don't resist. Then, begin to use your .imagination. Women have avoided rape by telling their attackers they have syphilis or cancer, or have threatened suicide. Be careful, though. Many rapists won't buy this story unless you're totally convincing. One woman urinated all over her attacker and then explained she had chronic kidney problems. She said she couldn't control herself when she got excited. Her attacker was so embarrassed that he apologised and left. ; Another woman told her attacker that she was three months pregnant and to please not lie on her stomach so he wouldn't hurt the baby. Her assailant said he didn't want to hurt' a little baby and took off. One woman escaped the infamous Boston Strangler by pretending her husband was in the next room. She didn't scream or say.'My husband will kill you.' Instead she smiled and winked, whispering, "Sssh, my husband's in the other room asleep." He left quickly. Another method of dealing effectively with your attacker is to act humble. Remember, you are dealing with a man who may be angry at women. For example, you might say: ' r "I was so scared, until I saw you." "I'm so lonely. I really needed someone to talk to tonight." . : Or you might compliment him, but don't be phony about it. One woman who was being followed turned to the man and said, "Mister, I've We seriously , urge everyone and especially Seniors to get out and Rzx Hell. After all, after next week, there ain't nothuY left to celebrate. v Of ficers of the Class of 77 Karen Vail secretary Jeff Fowler treasurer Alan Toll vice-president Hill Carrow president Avery incident exsgcrctsd To the editor Once again the DTH is guilty of irresponsible journalism. The story by Amy McRary, entitled "Members of BSM receive KKK. threats," in " Thursday's DTH was totally exaggerated and blatantly in error. ' We would like to point out several of the errors made by Miss McRary in her story. You do not acquire rights by robbing them from others. You do not exercise free speech at the expense of another's liberty to speak. Carolyn Jack and Philanthropic Literary Societies President, Dialectic Sexist T-shirts? To the editor: Perhaps men and women both will be able to see more clearly the harm that sexist advertising does us all if they look at a more extreme example of the problem than the Schlitz ads. I am referring to the T-shirts worn by the employees of Blimpie's which proclaim Blimpie's subs to be "the second best taste treat in the world." I won't insult anyone's intelligence by explaining what the world's best taste treat is. - I hope that women who have enough self respect to think of themselves as something more than "taste treats" will stop patronizing Blimpie's until the employees stop wearing these T-shirts. Similarly, men with enough maturity to respect women as human beings should not support this business. Women should not become complacent -with the progress we've made as long as this kind of thing exists. A couple of women in cabinet posts and cigarette ads telling us what a long way we've come aren't much good if another generation of men as well as women is being conditioned to think of women as objects and not as people.' Anne Beckwith 828 James been followed home from work every night this week and I'm scared to death. Would you mind walking me to my apartment?" "Well, sure," the man said sheepishly. "I'd be happy to." She took his arm and they walked to her apartment. When they reached her door, she handed him her key. He unlocked the door, handed back her key and left. The woman then phoned the police and gave a description of the man. It turned but that he had a history of molesting women. If all fails and you have utterly exhausted your imagination and your attacker seems bent on killing or maiming you, then, and only then, should you use physical force. The successful attack is not dependent on your physical strength so much as it is on the physical closeness to your attacker. If you're being tied up (which was the prelude to Richard Speck's killing of seven nurses in Chicago), come on strong sexually. Make sexual overtures, such as, "Why don't you tie me up later? I have a better idea for now." Once you have your attacker physically close to you, you can do bne of two things, Storaska says: ' - Place your hands on his face as if you're about to kiss him. Slowly and gently, move your hands closer to his eyes. Then put both thumbs over each eyelid and press down hard. At the very least he will go into shock, and he may be temporarily or permanently blinded. : If you don't think you could manage this gruesome task, you might: ' Stroke one of your assaulter's testicles very gently and then suddenly squeeze it hard. That will send him into instant shock. Be sure you are cupping one of the testicles before you . squeee. The key to this WOUi First of all, no one was "hit" by a water bz as reported. All 10 water bags (seven of which were directed at white students) fell short of the "assaulted" and merely splashed water on their victims. Second, no rocks were thrown except by the blacks who took it upon themselves to raid the dorm in search of the water bags. Would Miss McRary have her readers believe that Avery residents keep rocks in their rooms to throw at blacks? We should hope not. Third, the overwhelming majority of the obscenities were directed at Avery residents by the black students. Fourth, the Avery resident advisers did not aid in the search for the residents who threw the bags. They, instead, attempted to displace the blacks from the dormitory. We sussst that in the future, Miss McRary get her facts straight before writing a story on such a sensitive subject. No one asked us what happened. We would have been glad to comment. The story proves to us who is truly guilty of "severe racism." If there was in fact a "KKK of UNC," why would it be a secret organization? The BSM has proven that a ' racist organization can extort University funds (see the photo on Wednesday's front page). Signed by eight Avery residents Opinions, not legal decisions To the. editor . In his letter (April 21), Bob Morrell says that "Homosexuality is, in my opinion, deviant (as noted, 'against nature) and maladjusted behavior." In my opinion. Bob Morrell is demonstrating deviant and maladjusted behavior. However, I do not question the legality of his action. Charlotte Mercer Rt. 4, Pittsboro Prslso for flyer To the editor. k A few words of praise are in order for the person(s) who designed the promotional flyer for the Yackety Yack that is currently posted all over campus. It was indeed a pleasant surprise to see a happy, smiling gay couple included among those other glimpses of life at UNC. Tom Can Department of Botany Redheaded and proud To the editor, 1 enjoyed reading Pam Dorris' column "Carrot-tops unite you're unique so flaunt it" (April 21). Anyone who attempts to negate an argument by complicating the periphery ' beyond comprehension is not worth winning over. Please play with your logical tinker toys in 'some other mud puddle. My opinion and my point stand. You've judged it. 'Let others do the same. Adrian B. VanBakel Durham technique is gentleness. If your boyfriend, date or Uncle Joe attacks you, you would probably be reluctant to use these drastic methods. In those situations it is better to turn your attacker off sexually, by urinating or vomiting. One young girl avoided being raped by the man whose kids she babysat for by telling him, "You know, Mr. Jones, this could be happening to your little girl in nine or ten years." The man broke into tears, apologized profusely and took the girl home. She still babysits for his children, and there has been no further incident. If you are raped, call the Chapel Hill police. They will search the area for clues to your attacker's identity and will take you to N.C.. Memorial Hospital, where you will be given a "morning-after" pill to prevent a possible pregnancy. You will also receive medicine to counteract the possibility of venereal disease. The hospital offers complete confidentiality and counseling for you and your family. The victim receives these services regardless of her ability to pay. If you feel the need to talk to someone about your experience, but don't feel you can discuss it with family or friends. Chapel Hilfs Rape Crisis Center offers a good alternative. The counselors have been trained to deal with the emotional, as well as legal, aspects of rape. .
