Bernstein taught economics at UNC five years before joining the U.S. Treasury Department in 940. In 1946 he became assistant treasury ecretary, and now is president of E.M.B. Research Economists, which he founded in 1958. In addition to Bernstein, Edwin Gill and Mary Semans will receive honorary doctor of laws (LL.D.) degrees at the commencement ceremony in Carmichacl Auditorium. Chancellor N. Fercbee Taylor made the announcement of the honorary degrees Wednesday. According to William Little, vice chancellor for development and public service, it is a tradition at UNC for the chancellor to select the commencement speaker from recipients of honorary degrees. Gill retired this year after 24 years as North wow $ V X"" S;':SWM: Semans Bernstein Carolina treasurer and more than 45 years in public service. He was instrumental in establishing the first parole system in North Carolina and has served as commissioner of paroles. Gill was a member of the N.C. House of Representatives for one term, and he was director of internal revenue before his election as state treasurer. Semans is known primarily for her support of the arts in North Carolina as well as public service. She is a founder of the North Carolina School of the Arts and has served in Durham city government. She received the National Brotherhood Award for distinguished service in the field of human relations, and she is on the board of trustees of a number of institutions of higher education. - Recipients of honorary degrees are approved by both a faculty committee and the Board of Trustees. Taylor makes the final selection from the names approved by the board and the faculty committee. Bernstein taught economics at N.C. State University after receiving his bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago and his master's and doctorate from Harvard. He came to UNC in 1935. Bernstein served as chief negotiator for the Unittd States at the conference that established the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and he was research director for IMG from 1946 to 1958. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the U.S. Treasury. No interpreters provided for deaf UNC,Western to face discrimination suit The University of North Carolina and Western Carolina University are being sued by the National Center for Law and the Deaf Legal Defense Fund for discrimination against handicapped persons. The schools are charged under the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits federally funded institutions from discriminating against the handicapped. The plaintiff, Jimmie R. Crawford, is a graduate student at Western Carolina. Crawford, who is deaf, says that the University's refusal to provide interpreter services at the school's expense denies him equal access to classes. Legal Defense Fund lawyer Marc P. Charmatz said the case will be applicable to all other colleges and universities receiving federal funds. A favorable ruling for Crawford will be a landmark for deaf students enrolled in colleges throughout the country, he said. Currently, deaf students pay for interpreters in addition to their regular tuition fees. ineir regular luuion iees.. God Himself is quite an Author! Quite an Editor! Quite a Columnist! He Is "King of Kings, Lord of Lords Where the word of a king is, there is power The Word of God is quick and powerful He spake and the worlds came into existence, including Milky Ways and Galaxies millions of "light years" distance. We like to hear that great song "How Great Thou Art" but how Is It that we don't like to read His Book and hear all He has to say, and learn of Him whom to know Is Eternal Life? In the Old Testament there are approximately seventeen hundred and fifty passages (1750) prefaced by 'Thus saith The Lord," "God spake," or kindred words that indicate God Himself is speaking. But our generation has but little, if any, time for all that talk: "The Ancient of Days Is out of date." Is it not so, Mr. Modernist, D. D.? Nevertheless, He holds the world world in His Hand! He holds the tiny baby In His Hand! In commenting on Jdsus' statement regarding the little children: "Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven," someone has observed that after the little children appear on the scene as a "little bundle from heaven," dwell and are in the hands of parents, school teachers, preachers, etc. whose hearts are "deceitful above all-things, and desperately wicked," and never find it out, that of many of these children after a few years it might truly be said "Of such is the kingdom of hell and devil!" Where is the sincere grown person that don't feel ashamed and res pontlble that there are grounds for such an observation? Yes, God is quite an Author He used about forty different secretaries over a period of about 1 500 years to produce His Book, The Bible, and In the closing words warned men not to meddle with It by taking from, or adding to! Martin Luther was quite an intellectual giant, and a very learned man. Hear what he said regarding some of the great of the earth who have raged against The God of The Bible: "Infinite poten tates have raged against This Book, and have sought to des troy and uproot it king Alexander the Great, the princes of Egypt and Babylon, the monarchs of Persia, of Greece, and of R ome, the emperors Julius and Augustus but they noth ing prevailed; they are all gone and vanished, while the Book remains, and will remain for ever and ever, perfect and entire, ai it was declared at first." Take heed Modernists, New Tran slators, scorners and scoffers, you too will all soon be gone and vanish, but The Book will remain because God is its Author. Jesus Christ said of it: 'The Scriptures cannot be broken." Take courage and rejoice fundamentalists. John Wesley was called a "Bible Bigot" in mockery. But where are the mockers? Consider this Great Author and His Book scribes and writers of various and sundry kinds and assortments, all the way from the respected preachers, editors, columnists, etc., down to the miserable wretches that vomit and puke forth their vile and obscene filth that corrupts and perverts the sacredness of marriage vows and God ordained sex relations, affecting perversely even the unborn generation if God permits another one to arrive. (The God of The Bible in ordering the utter destruction of the Canaanites said they were so vile that the land itself vomited them out maybe our time is near!) There is a' definite connection between high grade and low grade scribes mentioned above, in that when the "highs" neglect or reject the "wisdom that comes down from above," savor of the things that be of men and not those of God, then the door is gradually opened for the devil to enter with his cohorts and men and society sink lower and lower. The Great Author says in His Book that every Idle word that men speak they shall have to give account of in the day of judgement. Look to yourselves! Look at that great stack of stuff on file of your verbal effusions your mind has manufactured for the pulpit, for the newspapers, for magazines, etc., to feed the minds of men, women and children, ft may be that some writers don't keep a file of their writing, but as soon as they get their check burn the junk and laugh at the "suckers." But God has it all on file in your record and He says He will bring every secret thing into judgement, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Here is a suggestion If you are interested in having a vital and successful Christian experience: Consider and meditate on Joshua 1:8, and Daniel 1:8, and Galatians 1:8. Sincere meditation on God's Law will show you that you are a lost soul, and point you to the Saviour. Purpose to obey Him and stick to your purpose like Ruth did to Naomi (Ruth 1:18 and 17): and like Daniel did to his purpose, and he and his friends gained the victory in the fiery furnace and In the lions den. Then hold fast to Galatians 1:8 and the apostates, the false prophets, the false preachers, and the devil won't be able to get you. P. O. BOX 405.
