2 ThaDsifyTer Heel Thursday, April 28. apel Hill By BERME RANSBOTTOM Staff Writer While the national consumer price index (CP0was soaring the first three months of this year, similar indicators for Chapel Hill, although higher than the national average, showed a slight drop from the fourth quarter 1976 prices. Higher prices for transportation, housing and food boosted the nation's cost of living 0-6 per cent in March, the Labor Department reported. Based on the first three months of this year, the CPI shot up at a nearly 10 per cent annual rate, compared to the 4.2 per cent rate for the final quarter of 1976. Despite these dismal figures nationally, indexes show that the cost of living in most reporting North Carolina cities actually, decreased in the first quarter 1977. The scale used compares local average costs to average national costs. If the local average equals the national one, its rating is 100. Figures below 100 indicate that local costs are below national average, and figures greater than 100 indicate that local costs are above national average. cohabitation serious about their relationship, they sometimes are hesitant to take the extra step to get married. "It presents a good deal of difference because sometimes they aren't ready for that extra commitment," he said. Reinhold said most of the unmarried couples he sees are serious and are committed to their relationship. And they frequently have problems similar to those of married couples. A recent survey of UNC students conducted by a UNC sociology class indicated that 8 1 .7 per cent of those surveyed have never cohabitated. But approximately 16 per cent of those who answered the survey said they either are cohabitating now or have done so in the past. Another 1.9 per cent said it was "too soon to teir but were thinking about it. The survey defined "cohabitation" as living with a member of the opposite sex while unmarried for at least four nights a week for at least six weeks. The survey was answered by 580 UNC students. Because only a small portion of these respondents actually are cohabitating, these statistics might be somewhat inaccurate, cautions John Reed, associate professor of sociology, whose class conducted the survey. In the survey, the students who said they are cohabitating or have in the past were asked some questions about their relationships. Students in this group tended to have mixed views toward marriage, with 31.4 per cent saying they do not intend to marry the person they are living with, 22.5 per cent saying they do plan to marry the person they are living with and 24.5 per cent saying they arc not sure yet. Food indexes, based on a survey cf approximately 200 items, decreased substantially from 106.9 in fourth quarter 1976 to 95.8 in first quarter of 1977. Utilities 1 n this group, 8.8 per cent said they did not plan to get married at first but do now, 2.9 per cent said they originally planned to get married but do not now and 9.8 percent said they have thought about marriage "off and on." A frequent problem for cohabitating couples is whether to tell their parents about their living arrangement and dealing with parental reactions once they find out. In the survey 53.4 per cent of the cohabitating couples said their parents do not know about the relationship. Most of the parents who do know about these living arrangements have mixed reactions. Only 6.8 per cent of those surveyed said their parents approve of the couples' living together. "They are concerned about revealing this to their parents and are wondering about how to tell them," Reinhold said. "They often have a fear of being disapproved or have to deal with the pressure of parents and family members who expect an eventual marriage."' Occasionally, 'some unmarried couples Comp Sci Dept. to consolidate programs The Department of Computer Science will consolidate three introductory programming courses into one beginning with the first summer session. Computer Science 14, entitled "Introduction to Computer Programming," will replace Computer Science 17-19, according to John E. Leonarz, administrative director for the computer science department. "The change will be a purely administrative one," Leonarz said. Also, there are occasional problems about the desire of one member of the couple to have children and get married. Occasionally, but more rarely, Reinhold said he sees a single person who is thinking about moving in with a man or woman but is not sure whether he (or she) wants to be committed to cohabitating. Barbara Johe, one of Reed's students, has been analyzing survey responses and has found that these problems frequently occur among the students who answered the survey. "Some of them felt guilty that they had not told their parents," Johe said. She also found that some people who were cohabitating felt tied down by the relationship, while some had problems adjusting to the habits of the person they were living with. One UNC student seriously talked about getting engaged to her boyfriend, but they decided instead to rent an apartment and live together to see how things would work out. No questions were asked by the landlord when she rented an apartment in her name, only differences among the 17-19 courses as they exist now are the types of examples and problems chosen. The material covered in these courses is basically the same." As the courses stand now, the material is designed for certain applications. Computer Science 17 emphasizes programming for business uses, 18 for social science uses and 19 for language-processing uses. "The new 14 course will be a general programming course for those who do not want to take the course emphasizing the empty boxes below so that each add up to 100. Oi 6C e it umjjxj an utu vun ttiuoziOH : -::: Me J slightly Joe Augustine, executive director of the Chapel Hill Chamber of Commerce, who supplied the f gures, explained that Chapel Hill indexes started above the average 100 mark because prices on the East Coast generally are higher than the national average, as are prices on the West Coast and in extreme southern Florida. Augustine could only speculate as to why price indicators in Chapel Hill decreased over the last year. "One of the commodities which caused the increase was coffee. Places like New York and California are going to show that immediately panicking, buying up surpluses and creating an artificial demand. We don't do that much in Chapel Hill," Augustine said. The most dramatic overall drop in North Carolina was reported by Rocky Mount. Its index fell from 104.2 in 1976 to 99.8 in first quarter 1977. Ashevill edropped from 95.7 to 94.1, Durham from 102.3 to 98.4, Hickory from 95.0 to 92.6, Southern Pines from 100.2 to 99.7 and Winston-Salem from 101.2 to 99.8. Greensboro had the only reported increase, a slight rise from 104.0 to 104.9. Continued from page 1 . and her boyfriend moved in with her. "I was worried about feeling tied down," she said. "We were also afraid that our parents would find out or that the landlord would find out and say something." Her parents never found out about the relationship. But she said her boyfriend's father finally figured out what was going on, so his son told him that he was living with his girlfriend. His father did not object. After living together for a semester, they both decided that school pressures and extracurricular activities were putting a strain on their relationship, and they decided to move out. "Fm living with two other girls now, and he's living with some other guys," she said. "We still have a good relationship and still spend the night with each other now and then. "Cohabitation worked out very well, and I'm glad that we did it, but there were some problems. I always had to answer the phone to avoid suspicion. Cohabitation has a lot of moral and emotional questions. It's a very big step." mathematical and scientific applications," Leonarz said. In addition to the consolidation of the 17 19 courses. Computer Science 16 ("Introduction to Computer Use in Science and Mathematics") will require a Math 3 1 Si prerequisite. "The purpose of the prerequisite would be to use examples that would permit the student to get an appreciation of how a computer handles calculus problems," Leonarz said. r'S' r yr Over A fw .
