a mm iiwr't country," Jim Rumfelt said. "Also, there are more miles of rural roads in North Carolina than in any other state." The best routes generally go Northwest, Southwest and South from Chapel Hill! Avoid the heavily used routes such as N C 54, U.S. 15-501 and N.C. 86. These heavy volume highways are extremely unsafe for the cyclist. By following the rural roads to the Northwest the rider will encounter rolling hills that are not too difficult to climb. The scenery is very good although the roads are a little rough in places. The roads will take the rider to Hillsborough, Cane Creek or the Union Grove area. The best way to leave is on Old 86 from Carrboro. To the Southwest are many backroads off of Jones Ferry Road that take the rider into the hills of Orange County. These roads are smoother than those to the North. A good route going South is Farrington Rd. It is hilly but Lake Clearwater is only a few miles away and the cyclist can take a cool dip at the end of the ride. To plan a good bicycling trip it will be helpful to have a good county road map. It is good to plan the trip so that you ride out into the country and then loop back toward town. An average trip of 15-20 miles should take from two to three and a half hours. lx il'" r iJ I V X & 11 X m X I I - V til - v aw d rjC&3 L3 It u W! ri i ci fr' i If It it , " " ' - " iC S V , V BiKing enthusiasts breeze along the road on a hot afternoon.
