Chapel Hill a hard place to leave
Back in the days when the walks of
Chapel H ill were sand, it was said that if
the sand got in your shoes you could
never leave. Evidently that must have
happened to Katherine Carmichael, an
English professor and advisor at UNC
for 31 years. At 64, Miss Carmichael is
not about to give up her work and is
embarking on a trip to Turkey where she
will teach English to Turkish students at
the Istanbul Language and Cultural
Association housed in the U.S. Counsel
there. In a story on page 8 Miss
Carmichael talks about her years as a
teacher and reflects on some of the
changes she has seen at Carolina.

Coors Coming to North Carolina?
Many beer drinkers swear by the name
of Coors, a beer that some contend is in
a class by itself. Until now, Coors has
been unavailable in North Carolina. But
a newly-formed Greensboro
corporation wants to change that. It all
depends on the state's Alcoholic

Carolina Bridge Club invites all
bridge players, regardless of ability, to
play duplicate bridge on Wednesday
afternoons beginning at 1:30-in Room
207 of the Carolina Union. Fractional
masterpoints will be awarded. UNC

The Science-Fiction and Fantasy
Clubs will hold meetings every Wednesday
at 7 p.m. in 209 Alumni. All interested
persons are invited to attend.
A free computer Short-Course will be
held at IRSS on June 9 in 307 Manning at 1
p.m.
Attention all trivia buffs. The summer Di
Phi is sponsoring a Trivia Contest on
Thursday at 9 p.m. at third floor New West.
The contest is open to any and all interested
persons. Questions will cover campus trivia,
in addition to general information questions.
A public meeting will be conducted by the
Residency Counseling Service of the
Student Consumer Action Union to
familiarize students with procedures
involved in obtaining in-state status for
tuition purposes. Free handouts and
information will be provided. The meeting
starts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, in
Room 206 of the Carolina Union. Contact

Student Legal Services maintains an
office in Suite C of the Carolina Union. UNC
student fees have paid for this service and
students may obtain legal advice at no
additional charge. Legal representation up
to and including all stages of trial is provided
for landlordtenant and consumer

The Transcendental Meditation
program and enlightenment win sponsor
lectures 1:30-7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, June 14,
in Room 206 of the Carolina Union. For

of Wheeling and Dealing, your complete
guide to biking in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro
area. Wheeling and Dealing is a guide to
bike laws, shops, maintenance, safety and

Undergraduate and Wilson Libraries,

"The Energy Quandary: Transient,
Serious or Desperate" will be held June 7
9 from 7-9 p.m. at UNC Campus Y. The
seminar will be led by Thomas Donnelly.
Ph.D. and Research Associate, Center for
Urban and Regional Studies UNC and a
member of the Orange County Conservation
Task Force. The last seminar on June 9 will
deal with "Conservation Affirming the
Negative."
