MOORE Staff Writer Carolina's Baseball Tar Heels chose not to disappoint a "Bat Night" crowd estimated at 1500 Monday night as they defeated East Carolina 3-2 on Kevin Caddell's single in the Uth inning in Summer League baseball action. Caddeil, who in the fifth inning broke up Pirate starting pitcher Billy Williamson's no hitter won the game for the Tar Heels in the bottom of the 1 1th inning with a single to right field that scored shortstop Jim Atkinson, spurred on by the cheering of the partisan crowd, led off the inning with a single. He stole second on a wild throw to first base to get into scoring position. But the rally. was short-lived as Williamson retired the rest of the side in order. The eighth inning saw the Tar Heels get back in the game when Williamson gave up two consecutive walks to Steve Beach and P. J. Gay. Phil Griffith's sacrifice advanced both runners to second and third. Mike Fox then delivered a two-run single to knot the score before being called out at second base port Thursday, July 21, 1977 Atkinson from second base. Atkinson led off the inning with a walk by ECU reliever Mickey Britt. Greg Robinson sacrificed to move Atkinson to second and Dwight Lowery was intentionally walked to try to set up the double play. That set the stage for Caddell's winning single. His two hits for the game helped him out of a previous 3-for-48 batting slump. The game began favorably for ECU when Pirate second baseman Pete Paradozzi sent UNC starter Blaine Smith's first pitch of the ballgame high oyer the leftfield fence for a homer. ECU's other run came in the fourth inning when Pirate first baseman Macon Moye scored from second base on Tommy Warrick's single. Williamson and Smith settled into a pitcher's battle through the seventh inning with neither pitcher giving up more than one hit. ECU's Robert Brinkley who singled in the sixth became the second pickoff victim of the night as he was called out on a Smith pickoff move. i Things looked up for the Tar H&ls in the seventh inning when lead-off batter Jim trying to advance on the throw to the plate. ECU threatened to score in the top of the ninth when Moye after a lead-off .single advanced to third base on back-to-back sacrifices by Warrick and two walks that loaded the bases. Smith came through with a clutch strike out of Paradozzi to end the inning. Smith received a standing ovation from the enthusiastic crowd. It was Carolina's turn to threaten to win in the regulation . nine innings when Jim Atkinson led off with a single reached first base on an error by first baseman Moye then stole second for his fourth steal of the night. After Robinson popped out, Lowry was once again intentionally walked. Caddell then flied out to centerfield. Williamson then walked Beach to load the bases and thus bringing on new Pirate pitcher Mickey Britt who has accounted for two of UNC's previous losses. Britt got Gay to line out to force the game into extra innings. Smith allowed just one hit in extra innings and was around in the 1 1 th for the UNC rally to pick up his well-deserved seventh victory against no losses. J Over 150 Main Dishes To 'Choose From.
