Atwood shows his versatility
inside the classroom and out
By NICHOLAS C. WILLIAMSON
You amaze and are amazed, all things to all
people;
Fluid, affable; concern more than just a
furrowed brow,
A hasty promise, or hollow rhetoric. You
give time, and
Yourself, the latter more precious than mere
minutes.
You command respect without demanding,
and give us back
Threefold all that we entrust with you. You
are a prince
Without scepter, and your fiefdom is of the
mind.
What you have given to us we can never
repay; your claims
Are of loyalty and not of money; your
endeavors a lantern
Which lights our way.
The above poem, written by John Oliver, a
former UNC MBA student and past
Executive Vice-President of the MBA
Student Association, is about Calvin
Atwood, Assistant Dean, in charge of
placement for the Graduate School of
Business Administration at the University.

Much of the time, you can find this man in
Carroll Hall, assisting MBA students in
finding either permanent jobs after
graduation .or summer jobs in between the
first and second years of the MBA program.
You can also find this man on stage
playing the starring role in the The World of
Carl Sandburg at the Theater in the Park in
Goldsboro.
Thirty years ago you could have found
him on I wo Jima, single-handedly defending
the colors of his Marine company, even
though he was temporarily blinded by hand
grenade shrapnel. The heroism he displayed
then caused the commanding general of his
division to track him down over two decades
later and to again commend Atwood for his
actions at I wo Jima.
If you have an interest in poetry and North
Carolina poets, you will find him presiding
over the North Carolina Poetry Society.
Some of his poetry can be found in past
issues of the New York Times, the Southern
Poetry Review, and the Texas Quarterly.
In addition, you may find Calvin Atwood
on the tennis courts in the spring and
summer time, defending his title as doubles
tennis champion of the students and faculty
members of the graduate school of business
administration.
"I guess that you could say
that I am here due to my cons
tant curiosity about human ex
perience, and, perhaps maybe
an instinct to be. at the right
place at the right time for me to
get the most out of experience
for whatever reason . . . It has
been my good fortune to help
find and work with many of
those individuals who will be
the leaders in the huge
management games of
tomorrow."

Orte question that come up almost
immediately in viewing Atwood's
qualifications is: What is a published poet
doing tunctionmg as Assistant Dean in 'he
graduate school of business administration?
"I guess that you could say that I am here
due to my constant curiosity about human
experience, and. perhaps maybe an instinct
to be at the right place at the right time for
me to get the most out of experience for
whatever reason, like the instinct and the
fortune to be at the UNC graduate school of
business just as it is beginning to achieve the
national recognition that it has deserved.
"I am extremely comfortable here because
many of the faculty members and many of
the students are creative, changing,
challenged and challenging people who
know that the business world is going to
require complicated and creative leaders for
tomorrowIt has been my good fortune to
help find and work with many ;of those
individuals who will be the leaders in the
huge management games of tomorrow."
