Thursday, August 4, 1977 The Tar Heel 5 Atwood shows his versatility inside the classroom and out By NICHOLAS C. WILLIAMSON You amaze and are amazed, all things to all people; Fluid, affable; concern more than just a furrowed brow, A hasty promise, or hollow rhetoric. You give time, and Yourself, the latter more precious than mere minutes. You command respect without demanding, and give us back Threefold all that we entrust with you. You are a prince Without scepter, and your fiefdom is of the mind. What you have given to us we can never repay; your claims Are of loyalty and not of money; your endeavors a lantern Which lights our way. The above poem, written by John Oliver, a former UNC MBA student and past Executive Vice-President of the MBA Student Association, is about Calvin Atwood, Assistant Dean, in charge of placement for the Graduate School of Business Administration at the University. notes There will be a meeting of the Executive Board of the Graduate and Professional Student Federation on Monday, Aug. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Frank Porter Graham Lounge of the Carolina Union. Thirty years ago you could have found him on I wo Jima, single-handedly defending the colors of his Marine company, even though he was temporarily blinded by hand grenade shrapnel. The heroism he displayed then caused the commanding general of his division to track him down over two decades later and to again commend Atwood for his actions at I wo Jima. If you have an interest in poetry and North Carolina poets, you will find him presiding over the North Carolina Poetry Society. Some of his poetry can be found in past issues of the New York Times, the Southern Poetry Review, and the Texas Quarterly.
