From the steps of the White House to eight straight World Fair appearances, this amazing group of performing men from Trinidad play a repertoire of music that ranges from classical to rock and roll. . .on oil drums. This feat has astounded audiences not only because of its oil drums, but because of the unbelievable fidelity and artistic accomplishments with which they render each concert or dance number. . .whether it be modern, classical, or their native Calypso. The calypso numbers are in a class by themselves, combined with exciting dancing and chanting as only the natives from Trinidad are capable of doing. The Paul Winter Consort appears at 8 p.m. October 7 in Memorial Hall. "The Consort is a bridge between the world of ordered music, classical and symphonic, and the world of free-form music, such as rock, jazz, and folk music," Winter describes. "We feel equal allegiance to African music, to Bach, and to our own home-made songs." Paul Winter, the group's leader, formed the Consort in 1967, after several years touring with his successful ensemble, the Paul Winter Sextet. Where the Sextet had combined Winter's early interest in classical music with the free style of jaz, the Consort added still another element the Latin idiom, inspired by Winter's tours of Latin America, especially Brail. The ensemble has performed at Carnegie Hall. Fillmore East, and numerous college campuses. Their music is invigorating, moving, a humanistic experience. Their scope is truly as wide as the inner man can stretch. .la flutist Herbie Mann brings his talent to Memorial Hall at 8 p.m. on October 28. In the last decade, Herbie Mann has established himself as the outstanding flutist in jazz. In addition, he has also managed to become one of a handful of musicians rooted in jazz who has made a significant breakthrough as a pop attraction as well. Though based in New York. Herbie has established himself as an international attraction as a concert artist and is always a big drawer of crowds w herever he performs. The Hampton Institute Choir will appear November 18 at 12 noon in thcGrcat Hall of the Carolina Union. This world famous singing group consisting of approximately 38 voices, under the direction of Mr. Bob Rice, has an impressive performance record. As well as giving concerts at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center and Philharmonic Hall, the choir has just completed a tour of the Scandanavian countries, the Virgin Islands and virtually every city in the United States. Participation in the tribute to Duke Ellington at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine with Dave Brubeck, Sarah Vaughn and Joe Williams offers another highlight to the choir's history.
