Tuesday, August 30, 1977 The Da-ly Tar Heel 5 M ! 'i DEACONS Wake Forest MacDougald 'determined jo do better' By GENE UPCHURCH) ( Sports Editor J J RprnnA in n tvrtaa m - WINSION-SALEM WhenUames MacDougald left a small, 1-A high school in Maxton, N.C. last year and went to Wake Forest, he brought with him something the Wake football program had been lacking hope. MacDougald did not start for Wake Forest until the sixth game of the season which was against Clemson. But he picked up 249 yards rushing in that game and ended the season with 1018 yards. MacDougald does not give the impression of the stereotypical football player. He is not big as football players go (5-9, 190) and speaks in a quiet, low-key manner. "There's an electricity in the air here this year," MacDougald, now a sophomore, says. "Last year, we made mistakes. This year, we've got that behind us. We're determined to do better." The success of the Wake football program this year could depend in part upon MacDougald's individual success. His 232 carries last season is more than half the total number of Wake rushing attempts. And he rushed for all but 696 of the Deacons' total yardage. MacDougald is able to pick up yardage when other backs might be stopped short. He has an amazing ability to bounce off would-be tacklers and keep his feet on the ground for extra yardage. But, as larger defensive men start to concentrate on stopping MacDougald, his effectiveness as a potential threat could be reduced. "I was a marked man last year in several conference games," he says. "But we must find out what we have as a team, like other ways to move the ball. J Wake has a handful of fullbacks, starting ' With hninr Stan RnlnrV anA Mori, rar who will be able to move the ball if MacDougald needs a break. "1. would like to see the fullback get the ball more so he could be honored for his running ability and not for blocking only." MacDougald was not recruited highly by colleges while he was in high school because of his size, because of the small high school he played for and the level of competition he played against. Many coaches saw him play, but thought that since he was playing against 140-pound tackles, college football might be too brutal for him. ' "The level you play in high school doesn't determine your ability to play in college," MacDougald says. "He's been a pleasant surprise to us," says Wake Coach Chuck Mills, himself probably the most refreshing thing to happen to college football since Gatorade. "I'd be lying if 1 told you that 1 thought I saw something in him that no one else saw," says Mills. "I didn't. I thought we had a good back, but nothing of this caliber. I knew he had talent, but we had to look at his competition." Mills is not hesitant to admit that the Wake football plans are being made around MacDougald. "We're going to give him that damned ball as many times as we can and let him carry it as long as he can hold up," he says. "But I won't destroy a kid," he adds, hinting at MacDougald's possible lack of durability. "The physical abuse concerns me. I don't know how well he will hold up." MacDougald's presence will be felt by other players on the field. "We know he's there," says tight end Randy Young. "The offensive line can open holes for anybody and they can run through. But he can take advantage of those times when the line breaks down. TUB AO CAN SAVE YOU MONEY! THIS AD CAN SAVE YOU MONEY! THIS AD CAN SAVE YOU MONEYITHE AD CAN SAVE YOU MONEY! THIS AD CANS i I 5 9 !
