FORE! Campus frisbee flying reaches new heights Thursday. September 1, 1977 The Daily Tar Heet 5 By MEREDITH CREWS Stiff Writer If you think you know all there is to know about UNC, you may be surprised to find an 18-hole golf course onNorth Campus that doesn't charge greens fees. Every Sunday afternoon, golfers tee off at Silent Sam's statue, but they don't use clubs. They use Frisbees. Frisbee golf is an excellent sport for 3i y"5.vi"""' just about anyone. If you like the psychological game of golf but can't afford greens fees, new golf clubs or a country club membership, Frisbee golf offers a wonderful opportunity for those who love to compete. The rules and terminology for Frisbee golf are the same as in regular golf, except that you don't start out with a handicap. Frisbees are called clubs. Frisbee targets are called holes, and 1 u- - T4t t fi -X- aw 'It,. 1 Finley golf course, watch out! Some Carolina "golfers" have devised their own version of the sport less expensive, less encumbering , and at least as difficult. The "course" is the Carolina campus, and the "clubs" are Frisbees. when you thow a Frisbee it's called u stroke. The total par of the Frisbee goll course is 69. and obstacles must be overcome to make par. Instead of sand traps, there are trees and trickling streams through the Arboretum to avoid. Al Bethune. an English major, has been playing Frisbee goll at I'NC lot three years. "The game is more difficult than most people imagine." he says. "It takes a lot of skill tp fight the wind, hook around trees, avoid roof tops and try lot accuracy at the same time. "The holes on the Frisbee golf course are varied. We use trees, columns, lire hydrants, statues, porches and a bicycle rack in front of Howell Hall." The Frisbee golf course was designed four years ago by Hal Smith, who is presently a dentist in Siler City. Although other people have made changes in the course, the one designed by Smith is most challenging. "You can't really explain the course." Bethune says. "II anyone wants to learn how to play, they just have to go to North Campus on Sunday afternoons and watch. "The course changes drastically from spring to fall. It's much more difficult in the spring because Frisbees get stuck in trees more often. "When a Frisbee gets stuck in a tree, you lose a stroke when you get it down. To avoid this, some people climb the trees and throw from the top. It gets amusing at times." I .vw m 1 1 JL Al Bethune is not only hurling a Frisbee he's playing golf. And Frisbee golf isn't lust something a couple of Carolina students made up in their spare time it's the object of an international organization dedicated to the sport. According to Bethune. dogs and Frat ploy gets brother arrested for larceny University Police arrested a UNC student Wednesday and charged him with the attempted larceny of an air conditioner, a police spokesperson said. Henry Jay Steinburg, 18, was arrested at 12:16 a.m. Wednesday after a police officer saw an air conditioner moving from side to side in a basement window, according to police reports. Police charged Steinburg after it became apparent someone was attempting to remove the air conditioner from the window, police said. The air conditioner, valued at $150, was recovered at the scene by police officers. The suspect told police his fraternity brothers had bet that he would not deliver the air conditioner to the study room of their fraternity house, police said. Smith Hall, a classroom building, is usually locked after hours. University Police discovered the alleged attempted larceny while checking locks and doors around the building. Steinburg. 216 E. "Someone is always trying to help out by throwing the Frisbee back to you. When you tell them to leave it alone, they think you're being rude because thev don't know vou're playing Frisbee golf. "Dogs are always running away w ith Frisbees and you end up chasing dogs all over campus." Carolina's Frisbee golf players hae been on radio, WTVD news and the CBS morning news program. "We were playing on campus one beautiful Sunday afternoon," Bethune remembers, "When a film crew from WTVD stopped to shoot some footage of the Frisbees Hying in the air. The film turned out so beautifully that CBS bought it from WTVD and aired it on their morning show. "We were tipped off that the camera crew was coming to watch us play, so we put coolers filled with beer behind a few of the holes on the course." he added. Frisbee golf is not limited to Chapel Hill. The International Frisbee Golf Association prints a book which describes all the officially recognized Frisbee golf courses in the world. "We want to have our golf course recognized by the association, but we haven't had the time to go through all the red tape," Bethune says. Just as in golf, some Frisbee players use different "clubs" for each hole. 2:00 3:45 5:30 7:20 9:10 ALL NEW SHE SERVED HER COUNTRY THE OHLY WAY SHE KNEW HOW! 1 JOEY HEftTHERTOfl AS XAVCRA HOUAMOCR n THE Happy HOOKER GOES TO WASHINGTON SIWMNG GEOKf NflMflTOH b cam u 2:50 5:00 7:10 9:20 Thurt Late Shews Sept 2-3 T 'ii Jjg EAST FRANKUN STREET (J II Swept Away A film by R Lina Wertmuller I Young Frankwitttln - HM Ow Animal Cradwr Mint Broth" Ptut "Zorre" Chp. 2 WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO 3: 15 THE BIGGEST MOONSHINE 5:15 RACKET IN THE COUNTRY? 7: 15 9:15 GREAT LIFE STORY OF 3:00 WENDELL SCOn, WORLD'S 5:00 1ST BLACK RACE CAR DRIVER 7:00 9:00 IN MEMORY OF ELVIS 3:30 5:30 7:30 9:30 qfisz DAVID CJIKRADINE I KATE JACKSON M COLOR RICHARD PRYOR RAM GRIER He drove 'em wild! Some people think they putt better or get more distance with different Frisbees, but I think it's better to get used to one Frisbee to increase the accuracy of a shot," he says. "The International Frisbee Golf Association recommends the World Class 141 or the World Class 115. But any Frisbee you are accustomed to is the best." he adds. Frisbee golf has other advantages aside from competition. "It's so beautiful on campus, and different colored Frisbees flying in the air are much better than plain old golf balls, Bethune says. "We even pick up trash on campus to keep our course looking nice." Several different strokes are used in Frisbee golf, including the side-arm. back-hand, overhead and roll throws. "The biggest mistake beginners make is trying to throw too hard," Bethune says. "Accuracy counts more because it reduces the score. It's hard to learn control but the only way to develop it is by practice. "Always aim for the base of the object you're t ry ing t o h it ," he say s. " I f you aim too high, the Frisbee will float over the hole. "Always remember the most important thing about Frisbee golf: make sure you yell 'fore' before your Frisbee hits a campus policeman in the head." It is also a game for both sexes, he savs. "And it doesn't matter if you aren't athletic." womaneraffl Decorate your new room with beautiful, unique and inex pensive handcrafted items from Womancraft.
