After a cold winter and a blistering summer, the expansion of Kenan Field House is nearly completed. From the outside, very little has changed. The exterior appears basically the same. The colors have not been changed, nor are there any glaring rip-ups or tacky cinder block jobs. On the outside, the part everyone gets to see on Sept. 17, the view from the stands looks very much the same as last year. The extension totals 32 feet towards the playing field, however, none of the shrubbery has been displaced. Inside, the part the players and coaches see most often, expansion is the key word. There is now a film room for filing Carolina game film, as well as opponents', film from previous games. Next to the storage room is an editing room. Included in the film is one clip that dates back to 1936. Over 2000 reels can be stored. Before remodeling, the four offensive coaches shared an office, as well as did the four defensive coaches. Now, all eight coaches have individual offices with a telephone and blackboard. The rooms are wood-paneled., and eventually will be equipped with a screen and projector. For meetings with offensive or defensive units, there is a conference room with more chalk boards and screens, and a divider for splitting -the room up for special skull sessions. The room is equipped with swivel desks to save the trouble of constant moving of furniture. The locker room is another major improvement. In previous years, the junior varsity team was housed in the visiting locker room until the Saturday of a home game. Before Tar Heel opponents arrived, the JV squad had to relocate their equipment for one weekend. The new locker facility has space for 1 17 and shower space for 40. The other major addition to the fieldhouse was the installation of weight equipment. No longer will the football team have to do their weight-lifting in Woollen Gym. Three weight rooms with Universal and Nautilus equipment now aid Athletic Fitness Director Paul Hoolihan in monitoring player progress. If players want to take weight off, there is now a sauna bath and a steam room in the fieldhouse. Whirlpool space has been expanded, as has treatment space for help of the injured. Room has been provided for taping, separate from the examination area. M oney for the expansion was provided by the Kenan Foundation, and the result has been general satisfaction. "Welcome to the Kenan Hilton," said Head Coach Bill Dooley. "It's not quite complete yet but we're almost finished."
