Car stolen, bloodied;
New West vandalized
University Police said they have
discovered bloodstains in a recovered
automobile that was reported stolen Friday
from a medical complex parking lot.
Police said Debra Lee West Godding, an
employee of N.C. Memorial Hospital,
reported she found traces of blood on the
passenger seat of her car and a quarter tank
of gas missing when she returned to it Friday
afternoon. Earlier, Godding had discovered
her pocketbook and car keys missing while
she was at work.
The car was parked in the space where
Godding left it, police said. According to the
Coffee Klatch opens Tuesday
By KATHY HART
Staff Writer
Reminiscent of the old English coffeehouses,
w here the talk was informal and the atmosphere
relaxed, is the University YM-YWCA-sponsored
Coffee Klatch, held every Tuesday and
Wednesday in the Pine Room from 9 to 1 1 a.m.
"It is a very informal atmosphere where
students get to know another side of their
professors," said Emily Cate, co-chairperson of
Coffee Klatch. "You get to know things about
professors and other students you can't learn in a
classroom situation."
"The topics of conversation vary widely," said
Manley Roberts, Coffee Klatch publicity
chairperson. "You can go in and talk about
whatever you want to talk about,"
Professors are invited from every department of
the University, but each week one department
receives a special invitation to attend.
Coffee and pastries are served at each meeting
for a minimal fee. A host and hostess, chosen each
week from a different campus organization,
handle introductions and make sure things run
smoothly. Eventually, however, the host and
hostess system will be eliminated.

complaint. Godding believes the car was
stolen because of the missing keys, the
expended gasoline and the bloodstains.
No arrests have been made in connection
with the alleged theft.
In another incident, vandals entered two
rooms in New West Saturday and broke
several window panes, according to police
reports. Police said window air conditioners
in two rooms were tampered with and
officers believe the suspects were attempting
to steal them. Total damage to the building
was estimated at $75.
Coffee Klatch began last spring, but Cate said it
lucked the publicity it needed to become firmly
established. "People are not used to the idea, and it
is hard to get students accustomed to the thought
of talking to professors in an informal
atmosphere," she said.
"The idea for Coffee Klatch originated last
summer at the Reidsville Conference, where
student leaders and administrators meet to discuss
campus problems," said Jerry McConnell. who
helped coordinate the project last year.
"Everyone was concerned about the lack of
communication between students and
professors." he said. "Professors remembered the
coffeehouses that were formerly held at the
University and thought the idea should be
reinstated."

Pillow, mattress
burn in dorm fire
A pillow and a mattress were the only items
damaged by a smoldering fire which was
extinguished early Saturday morning in a Stacy
Dormitory room after a passing jogger spotted
smoke coming from a window.
Chip Delamater, the only occupant of the room
at the time of the fire, said the blae was started by
a cigarette left burning in an ashtray. The cigaratte
ignited a study pillow and burned a small hole in
the mattress where Delamater was sleeping.
Steve Holmes, a Stacy residence assistant, said
he was awakened at 6:45 a.m. by a jogger, who told
him smoke was coming from a second-floor
window. Holmes and the jogger, identified only as
Mike, went to the room, woke up Delamater and
put out the fire with a fire extinguisher and several
buckets of water.
According to housing department officials, all
dormitory mattresses are flame-resistant.

Renwick new
associate dean
Hayden B. Renwick, head of UNC's
minority-advising program, was named
associate dean of the College of Arts and
Sciences last week.
As an assistant dean in the College in Arts
and Sciences. Renwick was instrumental in
implementing a counseling network for
minority students at UNC.
The program uses sophomores and
juniors to work with freshmen and transfer
students. Counselors advise new students in
academics and offer help to new students
having trouble adjusting to other areas of
college life.
In his new job. Renwick hopes to expand
the adviser program to minority students
and to institute a similar program for
disadvantaged white students, Renwick said
Sunday.
"I feel the University is going in the
direction of positive integration of the
student body," Renwick said. "I hope by
1980 we will have a program that will benefit
all students."
Renwick also was named as special
assistant to the chancellor last month. Those
duties include advising Chancellor N.
Ferebee Taylor on ways to eliminate racial
duality and to increase minority enrollment
at the University.
Renwick is a graduate of Johnson C.
Smith University and received a master's
degree in education from UNC in 1965. He
became assistant director of Undergraduate
Admissions at UNC in 1969 and was
appointed assistant dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences in 1973.
He becomes the third associate dean in the
College of Arts and Sciences.

SGA receives 10 per cent of all parking spaces to

Only 5 per cent of the SGA allotment was used
