The Carolina Godiva Track Club ran to its
first major victory last weekend as the club
finished third in a field of 33 teams at the
prestigious Lynchburg 10-mile race.
The Godiva Club placed behind the
Washington Road Runners and
Charlottesville to take third place in a field
that included more than 1,700 runners. UNC
graduate student Dave Cich placed 13th in
the 18-22-age division while club members
Martha Klopfer of Durham won the
Women's Master's division and Bill Hall and
Dave Vanderhook took fifth and tenth
respectively in the 30-39 division.

Royle was pleased with the accomplishment,
but he and his fellow members will have little
time to rest on their laurels. Saturday,
immediately following the L'NC-N.C. State
Virginia varsity cross country meet, the
Carolina Godiva Track Club will hold its
"Hokum Karum."
Co-sponsored by the Athletic Attic, the
Hokum Karum is a two-runner, cross
country relay. The race will cover a total
distance of nine miles. Each member of the
team will run three l-mile legs alternating
with his teammate. Teams will consist of two
men, two women, a man and a women, or
two runners over 30. In each category prizes
will be awarded to each member of the top
three teams.
The prizes will be gift vouchers for the
Athletic Attic with $15 prizes going to the
winning team, $10 to the second team, and
$5 to the third-place team.
Also, residence halls may enter a team.
These teams can consist of up to six
members, allowing each runner to run only
one leg. The winning residence hall team will
win a keg of beer. A Wentworth and Sloan
Pewter tankard will be awarded to the fastest
man and tothe fastest woman.
Royle said this Saturday's race is not just
for the experienced runner. "I'm quite sure
that there will be many people there who've
never run cross-country races before," Royle
said. The Hokum Karum will be held on
Finley Golf Course. Interested persons can
register at the Finley Clubhouse. There is a
$1 entry fee for all non-club members.
The Carolina Rugby Club lost its match
last Friday with the team from Bistol,
England. The visitors took the match on
Fetzer Field by a score of 31-4. Rugby club
president Tom Ricketts said the outcome
was not a major surprise because Bristol has
one of England's finest university rugby
teams. Several of Bristol's players were
members of last year's All-England team.
Club member Bob Vaughn, a L NC senior,
has been selected as a trialist for the U.S.
National Team. Fifty of the United States'
best rugby players are selected to try out for
the national team, which will consist of 25
members. "Considering the fact that there
arc over 750.000 rugby players in the U.S.."
Ricketts said, "this is a very high honor for
Vaughn."
The Carolina Rugby club will participate
in the Norfolk Irish Rugger Fest Oct. 1-2.

night in Boshamer Stadium, winning the
first game 5-2 and losing the second 3-1.
Peanut Parks was the winner in the first
game, while Joe Roberts took the loss in the
nightcap as the Heels collected their sixth
win ol the season against three losses and a
tie.
The lar Heel women's goll team scored
three victories in matches at Longwood
College and William and Mary this week.
Carolina downed Longwood 8-4 and
James Madison College 8-4 in a head-to-
head Nassau tri-match Tuesday. Stephanie
Korncgay. Sue Cary and Bonnie Bell each
shot a 76 to tie lor medalist honors in the
match.
Women's basketball
Persons interested in trying out for the
women's junior varsity or varsity basketball
team should contact coach Jennifer Alley in
the Women's Gym before Wednesday, Sept.
28.
The Hokum Ka um cioss country race is
being held Saturday at Finley Golf
Course.
IM track signups begin Oct.3
Intramural track sign-ups begin Oct. 3 and
run through Oct. 5, not Oct. 7 as previously
announced.
Anyone interested in becoming a ski
instructor can stop by the intramural office
for more information. The French-Swiss Ski
College will be offering ski instructor clinics
on both Oct. 1 5 and 1 6 and on Nov. 5 and 6.
The clinic will consist of 16 hours of
intense training and will be conducted at the
Holiday Inn in Boone. Strong skiing
fundamentals are a necessity. Cost is $20.
