This juggling display was one of the many offerings of last year's Durham Street Arts
Celebration. This year artisans, musicians and dancers will also be downtown to add
to the fun. Activities run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. baturaay
Tomorrow's 4th Annual Durham Street Arts Celebration, sponsored by the
Durham Arts Council, promises to be better than ever, featuring all the favorite
activities of past celebrations as well as new events and entertainment, including a 5
p.m. street dance for everyone, in the 5-Points area.
Durham Arts Council volunteers will be downtown tomorrow with programs
and answers to all questions about the festival, which lasts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
These volunteers will be wearing hats embellished with the sunflower logo Frank
Holyfield designed for the celebration.
The Arts Council has printed over 350 T-shirts and 400 posters by hand, silk
screening the sunflower design.
Performances of all kinds will take place on the two stages located at 5-Points and
Mangum St. Jazz, folk, rock, old-time and bluegrass will be heard throughout the
day, and the Durham Symphony will give a special performance in the 5-Points area
at 3 p.m.
Two senior citizens' groups will perform as part of the Arts Experiences for Older
Americans program. One senior citizens group will do an original skit and a second
group will perform a series of folk dances. ,
The Apple Chill Cloggers will kick the celebration off at 10 a.m. with other
performances scheduled throughout the day. A Street Dance is planned for the 5
Points area from 5 until 6:30 p.m. to close this year's festival.
Food concessions of all kinds will be available including hot dogs, ice cream,
cotton candy, lemonade and soft drinks in addition to the food which will be
available from the downtown restaurants and snack bars. A special sidewalk crepes
cafe will be located near the 5-Points Foundation and will be serving three kinds of
crepes. . . .
The Children's Area will be located at Main and Mangum St. Activities will
include building wood sculpture, face painting, creative movement, mural painting
as well as performances by the "Touch" mime and jugglers.
There will also be a doll-making workshop at which children will make rag dolls
and clothespin dolls from remnants and bits of yarn.
Invitations have been sent to area artists by the sponsors of the Celebration, the
Downtown Revitalization Foundation and the Durham Arts Council and its
member organizations. A wide variety of art work and crafts will line the streets and
sidewalks of downtown. All of the work will be for sale by the artists and craftsmen.
