Pryor show ending
NEW YORK (UPI)-The Richard Pryor
television show will end with the Oct. 18
broadcast, NBC confirmed Wednesday, but
the network denied reports the comedian
was quitting because of censorship hassles.
Pryor and NBC have been at odds about
the comedian's use of possibly offensive
material in the show's family-viewing time
slot.
NBC confirmed that the show would go
off the air, but a spokesperson for the
network said there were never plans for more
than five weekly Pryor shows.
"That's all he wanted to do," the
spokesperson said. "We had hoped he would
change his mind and do more, but he
apparently hasn't."
Knievel plea postponed
LOS ANGELES (UPl) - Daredevil Evel
Knievel Wednesday was granted a

Knievel, 38, wearing a white leisure suit
emblazoned with three American eagles,
appeared before Municipal Court Judge
Frances E. Rothschild along with his
attorney, Paul Caruso.
Caruso told the judge that he was not
prepared to proceed at this time. Rothschild
permitted Knievel to remain free on $1,000
bail.

FORGET FUJI
The Gitane costs less than the Fuji ($135 vs $139)
The Gitane has a 5-pin alloy crank, but the Fuji has only a 3-pin
steel crank. That means the Gitane crank is lighter and stronger.
The Gitane guarantees its parts for 2 years while the Fuji parts
guarantee is only 1 year. (And they're the same parts).
Look, we'll sell you a Fuji if you want one. We carry them too, and
they're great bikes. We just think that the Gitane is a better buy for the
money. So forget the Fuji and. . .

University alumni contribute
over $400,000 in fund drive
The University Alumni Annual Giving
(AAG) program for institutional
advancement marked its 25th anniversary
with a bang this year: Alumni contributions
totaled more than $400,000 for the first time.
Citing the involvement of more volunteer
workers as the reason for the increase, AAG
Council Chairperson Harry W. Cherry of
Wilmington said 11.010 alumni made
contributions of $471,211, surpassing last
year's total by more than $ 1 1 5,000. Since its
beginning, AAG has raised $4.7 million.
AAG Director Tom Bost Jr. reported a 33
per cent gain in contributions over previous
donations. The average individual gift was
$43, up $8 from last year.
Continued from page 1 .
Louisiana is presently involved in
litigation with HEW over its desegregation
plan.
Or, HEW may decide to take
administrative action hearings in which
both parties present their case before a
hearings officer, probably an HEW official.
The case would then go to a review board
and HEW Secretary Joseph Califano for a
decision.
Sanders said the administration's lawyers
understood the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to
mean that funds would be cut off from
individual departments found violating the
Civil Rights Act.
For example, if a department in the UNC
College of Arts and Sciences was found to be
in violation, that would in no way affect
another department's status nor would it
affect any other department on any other of
the 15 campuses affected by the plan.
But Sanders said that if HEW rejects the
desegregation plan, it will try to exert a
maximum amount of pressure on the UNC
system to comply.

Centering- Venturing helps career planning
By TENLEY AYERS
DTH Contributor
So it's your senior year, and you still aren't
sure what kind of job you want. Or are you a
freshman who can't decide what field to
major in? The Career Planning and
Placement office may be able to help.
Centuring-Venturing (CV, a planning
process for creatively muddling through life
and work, is a new program designed for the
student who is searching for possible career
options.
Jane Kendall, assistant director of the
Career Planning and Placement office and
the organizer for the program, says CV is for
anyone who wants to learn how to plan a
career. The process is not just a "senior year"
problem.
"We are trying to raise a person's
awareness of his own life issues," Kendall
explains. The purpose of CV is to help him
learn how to organize it.
The program is designed for all classes
freshmen through graduate students.
Kendall describes the process as "an ageless
process; what people are doing throughout
their lives."
The groups are arranged according to the
special needs of the students. The specific
needs of each person in the group are
considered, and possibilities for careers are
suggested by the participants.
"In Centurying-Venturing, most of the
people want a career-oriented group,"
Kendall says. "We are dividing the groups up
according to what planning stages a person is
in."
