Lovely view at Hanging Rock By ZAP BRUECKNER Staff Writer The rugged, quartzite fortress of rock rises 200 feet straight up from the green forests of the Sauratown Mountains. While standing on a jagged ledge, one can look out over nearby mountains, valleys and even to the Blue Ridge Mountains farther to the west. This is Hanging Rock State Park, located on approximately 5,000 acres in the Sauratown Mountains of Stokes County, about 32 miles north of Winston-Salem on .. N.C. 89, N.C. 8 or N.C. 66. The park is open for camping and hiking year round as long as the roads leading to the park gate are free of ice and snow. , The park operates a rough camping area for groups at the rate of $2.00 a night or 20 cents a person per night (whichever is higher). Campers can reserve the campsites by phone or mail. Otherwise the sites are first-come, first serve. Hanging Rock offers an adventure in hiking and rock climbing, although not the kind that requires rope or special climbing equipment. To reach the summit of this particular rock formation, climbers must crawl up a narrow crevice for 200 feet. Often, climbers have to wedge their backs on one wall while pushing against the other with their feet, hoping the rock is not slippery. An easily walked trail is provided for those climbers not so daring and brave. Once on i r tub fpr -l h. r .... . -f f JhT W4!, The Hanging Rock top, one finds more rock outcroppings to scale. Besides mountain climbing, the park contains several hiking trails, swift running mountain streams and a few water falls. The park is only two hours away from the Chapel Hill area an easy getaway for a weekend or an afternoon. For information or reservations, call of write: Hanging Rock State Park Box 128 Danbury.
