Celebrated poet Nikki Giovanni will read works and lalk about her beliefs Sunday at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The winner of many awards, Giovanni often writes of the black experience in America, but also of love and other matters. She has written several books of poetry and articles and an autobiography, Gemini, but her talents are not confined to the realm of literature. Nikki Giovanni might be described as the modern day Renaissance woman. She has worked in radio and television and has a best-selling album. The poet also holds five honorary doctoral degrees and. in 1972, was the recipient of a Woman of the Year award from Ladies Home Journal magazine. Yet she chooses not to dwell on past accomplishments. When her volume of poems, My House, was published, she asked that a biographical resume not be written. "Tell them I was born in Tennessee; raised in Ohio; have one son, Tommy; received an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities form Wilberforce University, a plaque from the Cook County Jail. ..But most importantly, I can fly Like a bird in the sky."
