emeritus, and William S. Powell,
history professor, will present a
program on University history at 8 p.m.
Monday, Oct. 10, in 569 Hamilton Hall.
The program is sponsored by the
Undergraduate History Association.
Powell, a professor of N orth Carolina
history at UNC, will present a slide show
depicting the history of the University
through early sketches as well as recent
photographs.
Powell is the author of numerous
books, including 77i? First State
University: A Pictorial History. He also
taught a seminar on UNC history last
spring.
Coates will speak on UNC between
1914 and 1918, the years he was here as
an undergraduate. Coates is founder of
the UNC Institute of Government.
The program is being presented in
preparation for Unviersity Day.

The cheerleaders, the band and the
football players will offer something
different in the way of a pep rally today.
Instead of the usual Thursday night
running-through-the-streets, a pep rally
will be held at 12:30 p.m. today in the
Pit.
Cathy McDowell, co-head
cheerleader, said Coach Bill Dooley
would give a speech at the rally, and
some of the football players might speak
also.
"We wanted to try something a little
different," McDowell explained. "We
