Gary Hofstetter, who'usually finishes right on the heels of King in just about every raee, took ninth place. Dave Drechsel, who finished seventh on the team and 39th for the meet, said the team basically was pleased with its performance. "It was a great experience for us," Drechsel said. "It was a real good course, and our performance was a preview of the NCAA district meet." Drechsel said the course was in no way similar to Carolina's course at the l inley Golf Course. Tennessee's course is characterized by many hills and few level areas. It was the heels, Drechsel said, that helped out the Tennessee runners in the end. "No one (Carolina runners) was really disappointed. We did fairly well considering the time of the season." Drechsel also said he thought the team should have finished second, and the team as a whole thought it should have overtaken Kentucky. The cross country squad returns to the Triangle next Saturday to face Duke. The Blue Devils split a three-way meet with Wake Forest and State this past Saturday. The Devils lost to N.C. State 21-34 and squeaked by the Deacons 25-30. Women's golf 2nd The UNC women's golf team was unsuccessful in its attempt to defend the N.C. Association of I ntercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) State Tournament Oct. 6 and 7 in Boone. The Heels dropped to second behind Wake Forest and were followed by Duke. Leading the Deacons to their five-stroke win was individual winner Amy Geithner. Janet Haire, a UNC sophomore, trailed Geithner by two strokes to capture second place. Her second-day 79 was one of two sub-80 scores in the tournament. Freshman Cathy Graham followed her teammate by five shots in placing third. r f - 'fx ?;v v I If " . It took only six minutes for Sean Naber to find the net for the Heels, off a David Blum assist. Carolina (5-2-1) utilized a great passing game, some good one-on-one play, and fancy footwork to Roy Baroff to dominate the Paladins. UNC's strikers took repeated shots during the next 30 minutes but couldn't stick it in. The defense continued to sparkle, and finally at the 11-minute mark, John Fernandez fed Blum for the Heels' second goal. Within two minutes, the score was 3-0, as Brian Dunigan scored his first varsity goal after being brought up from the junior varsity squad. Furman did manage to get on the scoreboard on a contested goal with six minutes left in the half, but Carolina retaliated quickly, as Baroff scored, assisted by John Mansfield, padding the lead at 4-1 as the period ended. The defense was the story in the second half, as neither team could score for 30 minutes. Dorrance began resting his starters, and got good play from his. subs. With 14 minutes left, Billy Propster closed out the day's scoring an another assist by Mansfield. "Defensively we played real well," Dorrance said. "Hugh Bennett and Peter Griffin, along with Glenn Harris, Ed Fenimore and Baroff have really jelled. We're at the point where we've got a heck of a defensive team now." Dorrance admitted that the Heels were looking past this game to the start of the Atlantic Coast Conference season, and weren't particularly psyhced for the Paladins. "When you win a game you're not up for, it's good." 3:30 5:30 7:30 9:30 3:00 5:00 7:00 9:00 r VPNMflllf REMARKABLE. UNPRETENIOUS I '"v'r MEMORABLE IT IS TO BE REVELED IN ; ! COLOR j, i . .. m.
