One might think the UNC women's tennis team would be ripe for a letdown al ter
its big win Tuesday over Duke and its Atlantic Coast Conference tournament
championship last week.
The Tar Heels, 5-0 in dual matches this fall, host Furman at 2 p.m. today and Yale
at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, both on the Country Club Road courts.
A letdown could come against the Paladins, whom UNC regularly beat, but one is
much less likely versus the Eli. The reason is simple Yale dealt Carolina an
unexpected 6-3 loss here last spring.
In that match, the Tar Heels had no prior inkling that their opponent was that
strong. Most of the matches were close, with UNC dropping four three-setters in
singles.
Predictions based on that match are not too valid since both teams have four
different faces in their starting lineups this fall.
Only Susie Black and Janet Shands return for Carolina from the spring match,
and Shands was the lone Tar Heel to win in singles. New UNC players are Carney
Timberlake, who was injured last season, and freshmen Lloyd Hatcher, Margaret
Scott and Betty Baugh Harrison.
Yale's Susie Graham (at No. 2) and AnneSeidler(No. 3), both seniors, return to
face Carolina. They are joined by freshmen Natalie Smith (No. I), Janice Debuno
(No. 4), Lynn Garfinkel (No. 5) and Barbara Kallen (No. 6).
Graham beat Black 6-3,0-6,6-4 last spring and Seidler defeated Lisa Dodson 2-6,
7-5, 7-5.
The Eli are 4-0 this fall entering a match today against Duke. They have beaten
Rhode Island. Smith, Williams and Southern Connecticut.
The Furman team Carolina faces today had played only one match this fall, a 7-2
loss to Wake Forest, before facing the Deacons again Thursday. Carolina beat
Wake 9-0 last month.
The Tar Heels have had no trouble with Furman in recent matches, winning 7-2
last season and 8-1 twice the year before.
Gone from the Paladin lineup this fall is Mary Ellis Nicholson, who won the
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Region II Tournament here in
May.
Expected to start today for Furman are Kathy Moore, Becky Cox, Sue Houch,
Abby Kennedy. Katheleen Sheehan and Beverly Stephens, in that order.
