The Milwaukee Ballet Company, one of
America's finest and most versatile dance
troupes, comes to Memorial Hall Saturday
at 8 p.m. The show is part of the Triangle
Dance Guild '77-78 series.
Founded in 1969, this company of 25
young dancers performs a wide range of
classical and contemporary masterpieces,
including Benjamin Britten's Diversions, the
pas de deux from Le Corsair, Ravel's
Daphnis and Chloe and Glazounov's 77ie
Seasons.
The Milwaukee Ballet Company received
national recognition in 1976 when it was
invited to perform at Jacob's Pillow Dance
Festival in Lee, Mass. This appearance
prompted New York Times critic Clive
Barnes to remark, "It is a strong, elegant
ensemble. The men, for example, are
. particularly gifted, and the choreography is
neatly tailored to make the most of this
talent." The Milwaukee troupe was also
honored with an invitation to participate in
the National Endowment for the Arts
Touring Program.
The Milwaukee Ballet owes much of its
style and sophistication to artistic director
Jean Paul Comelin. Born in France,

'Equus' plays here
Tony Award winner, Equus, is the second production of Playmakers Repertory
Company's (PRC) 1977-78 season. Peter Shaffer's play revolves around the
psychiatric treatment of a young boy who has brutally blinded six horses and the
role reversals that occur between the doctor and his patient. The show, directed by
Tom Haas, runs through Oct. 30 at the Playmakers Theatre.
Michael Lipton stars as the psychiatrist, Martin Dysart. Soap-opera fans will
remember Lipton as Dr. Stanley Kurtz from NBC's Somerset.
Andrew Davis plays the role of Alan Strang, the disturbed young boy brought to
Dysart for treatment. Davis, a graduate of Yale School of Drama, has worked with
the Yale Repertory Company, as well as in such regional ensembles as the Actors
Theatre of Louisville and the Folger Theatre in Washington, D.C.
Robin Bartlett plays the role of Jill Mason and comes to PRC after performing
this summer in Joseph Papp's production of Andre Serban's Agamemnon.
The drama of Equus exists on many levels. It is at once a psychiatric detective
thriller and an electrifying inquiry into an ageless question - what is a person to the
Ws1iaffer has written precise stage directions for Equus, including a scene in which
nudity is essential to plot development.
In an interview, the playwright stated, "I wanted the boy to be examined
clinically, like a patient. . .The audience seems to feel the element of danger that is
inherent in nakedness."
PRC wishes to reiterate that there is a scene in the production of Equus involving
nudity both male and female. There is, however, no simulated sex act. Subscribers
who feel they may be offended by this aspect of the play may return their tickets up
to 24 hours prior to their subscription performance. They will be given credit.
Equus will be at the Playmakers Theatre Tuesday through Saturday evenings at
8 with Sunday matinees at 2. Additional performances have been added to meet the
demand for tickets. They will be at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct 23 and at 2 p.m
Wednesday, Oct. 26. For tickets and more information call the PRC box ottice at
933-1121. '
