Approximately 270 men pledged
fraternities.
Both Baker and fraternity adviser Roslyn
Hartmann attributed the successful rush to a
changing fraternity image.
"We're more than just partiers and
hellraisers," Baker said. "Many fraternities
are involved in community and service
projects."
In an interpretive study of 1977 rush
statistics, Linda Rugh, Panhellenic rush
chairperson, found that 22 percent of the
coeds who dropped out of formal rush did so
because they needed more time to adjust as
freshmen.
Hartmann also agreed that many
incoming freshmen have a general fear of
college which keeps them from looking into
fraternity life. "They need time to adjust, to
settle down," she said.
Rugh said an additional 22 percent of the
coeds who dropped out did so because they
were not invited back to their favorite
sorority.
