Blue -White
game Saturday
is sellout
Carolina basketball players receive
a respite from the six-week preseason
practice season while Tar Heel fans
get an early look at a contender for
the 1978 NCAA championship; the
Blues and the Whites mix it up in
Carmichael Auditorium this
Saturday following the Carolina
Clemson football game.
Teams had not been announced
when Weekender went to press in
mid-week, but Tar Heel Head
Basketball Coach Dean Smith
indicated the teams would be divided
as evenly as possible among
returning players, three freshmen
and one walk-on.
The game is a sellout.
Women's basketball eyes winning year
By DEBORAH JOHNSON
Staff Writer
If enthusiasm and spirit alone could
produce victories, there would be little doubt
Coach Jennifer Alley and her UNC women's
basketball team would have a winning
season.
With the women's Blue-White game set to
follow the men's game Saturday, the
enthusiastic coach speaks highly of her 1977
78 team, which includes seven players from
last year's 8-16 team. "The lack of a good
season last year has produced a positive
effect on this team. They want to win. They
definitely have the spirit and desire to win,"
Alley said.
But because basketball teams rely on
talent, experience and coaching and not
enthusiasm and spirit alone, Carolina must
be ready to produce some effective defense,
good rebounding and deadly shooting as it
faces a tough season. Its schedule includes
games with nationally ranked N.C. State,
Kentucky and Maryland, and participation
in the first-ever ACC women's tournament.
Alley, in her first year at UNC, said that
the team may not be ready to do that just
Chapel Hill's needs have changed in the past
several years; many services we once took for
granted have become problems: water, tran
sportation, balanced growth.
City government must, through proper planning,
find solutions.
I believe that, with your help, I can provide the
necessary leadership to solve these problems.

now, but that the Heels soon will find the
right combination. "There is going to be a
period of adjustment," Alley said. "We'll be
learning and benefiting from every game. It
may be January before we click, but we'll be
playing hard and aggressive all along."
Returning to lead the Tar Heels will be
junior Cathy Shoemaker and sophomore
Bernadette McGlade. Shoemaker averaged
11.8 points per game last season and was
team leader in the assists department with
58. McGlade also averaged ll.Sppgandwas
the team's leading rebounder with 297
rebounds.
Also returning is junior Fran Hardison,
who had a 5. 1 ppg average and 1 86 rebounds
last season.
Joan Leggett, a senior from Pinetown,
held the leading free throw percentage on the
squad last year with a 70.4 mark. She
averaged 10.8 ppg.
Joining the other returnees is sophomore
Rita Allen.
Two returning players who missed much
of last season because of injuries will be
returning to add talent and depth to the
team. Mickey McGlade, who played in only
four games last season, will be back as will
junior Joyce Patterson who played in only
three games last season.
The newcomers to the squad this year
range from a University of Virginia transfer,
5-2 guard Kathy Sapp.io three girls from the
1976-77 junior varsity squad, Jacqueline
Adams, Deborah Richardson and Rochelle
Small.
Also back after a year's absence is Linda
Sue Matthews. Matthews, a junior, played
on UNC's 1974-75 and 1975-76 teams.
The remaining players, all freshmen, are
"talented and fine athletes" Alley said.
Charlene Boykin played in the East-West
Classic this summer. She is a walk-on player
who Alley says has fine fundamentals and is
a good defensive player.
The other freshman is 5-1 1 Kelly Roche.a
Silver Spring, Md. native.
Alley, who came to Carolina from High
Point College, replaced Angela Lumpkin,
who resigned her post last summer.
