He's w orked hard figuring out sensible solutions to questions such as the use of recreational resources, future water supply, dealing fairly with town employees, and providing adequate and economical human services, He has a real concern for working out problems in u way thai achieves a lasiing solution that most of us can agree on. rather than imposing a hurried decision on a hesitant community. Perhaps most of all. I think he will bringa reasonable perspective to the issues related to growth in Chapel Hill - trying to balance new needs and older trad it ions. King crowned after late-hour ByJACI HUGHES Anita King's coronation as Carolina's 1977 H omecoming Queen came less than an hour and a hall" alter the final votes in the election were cast at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. King was chosen Homecoming Queen from among the top II vote-getters in the initial Homecoming Queen election Wednesday, The run-off election was held at a table set up near the student entrances of Kenan Stadium. David Royle. president of the Carolina Athletic Association(CAA). which sponsors the election, decided Friday afternoon to hold the run-off in response to criticism that the results of the first election were invalid because of the election procedure. In the election Wednesday, students cast their votes on small slips of paper by writing down the number of the candidate they chose. Student IDs were not checked, although each student was required to write his name, social security number and class on a roster. UNC Homecoming low-key Homecoming. Royle said, "This is the only election we (CAA) handle, and we had no reports on how elections (for Homecoming Queen) were done in the past." Royle said he was happy with the results ol the first election and that the second election was unnecessary but it was held "to remove any element of controversy." Royle said that although fewer students voted in the run-off than the first election., the results were almost exactly the same, with almost the same number of votes going to the leading candidate as in the first election. In the run-off election, the names of the candidates were printed on a ballot and student IDs were checked. Royle said the election was run fairly and no one should be unhappy or bitter about it. "You haven't got to run a security operation for an election of this kind." he said. pageantry. Ideally, that is. But not at UNC.
