8 Weekender Friday, November 11, 1977 Soccer misses playoff bid, ends season this Saturday By TOD HUGHES Staff Writer It will be a disappointed but proud UNC soccer team that takes on Washington & l.ee at 2 p.m. Saturday on Fetzer Field. The Heels 1 3-3-1 ) have won 10 and tied one in their last 12 games but got the disappointing news following their win over Guilford M onday that they had lost the national tournament bid they were hoping for. Four Division 1 teams from the southern district are chosen for the national tournament. The Heels were one of the top four Divison I teams in the South, trailing Clemson and Appalachian State, both of whom received bids. Unfortunately, the southern district of the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America includes Virginia, West Virginia, the D.C. area and Maryland. Howard and George Washington University were the final two teams to get bids Monday, which left UNC high and dry. So Saturday the season will end for Carolina's booters against Washington & Lee. "They're not as strong as teams we've played recently," Coach Anson Dorrance said, "although they do have a good coach. We're expecting a well-coached team, but one that doesn't have the caliber of players we have. It should be a close game; although since we've lost our bid, the enthusiasm may not-be quite as high. We'll go out Saturday and play for pride. "Washington & 1 ee should play us head-to-head. There's no reason to play a defensive game. Both teams will come out and play exciting soccer." The game Saturday will close out the collegiate soccer careers of three Carolina players goalie Lee Horton, fullback and co-captain Peter Griffin and strikerpiaf Kampfschmidt. Horton broke his leg early in the season, preventing him from alternating in the goal with Martin Trimble. "We'll see if we can start him," Dorrance said. Kampfschmidt has stuck in two winning goals in the past week-and-a-half against Maryland and Guilford. "Olaf has come on real strong in the past few games," Dorrance said. And Griffin has been the mainstay of UNC's excellent defense. "I'd like to see them all go out in style," Dorrance said. Harriers run in NCAA meet After its lackluster performance in the . ACC Championships last weekend, the North Carolina cross country team will try and rebound this weekend in the.District III NCAA Cross Country championships in Greenville. S.C. Ralph King, who said the team will have to regroup and show the rest of the competition it is capable of winning the big meet, will lead Carolina's contingent. King ended his three-year quest for the individual cross country honors by taking first place in the ACC meet, being the only runner to finish the Finley Golf Course in under 30 minutes. Gary Hofstetter. constant backup to King, will also lead the Tar Heels. Friday and Saturday November 11 and 12 ARROGANCE 405 W. Rotenuuy St. 967-9053 If L 4 Learning Together Inc.
