UNC fencers
at Penn State
The UNC men's and women's fencing
teams will participate in the Penn State
Intercollegiate, a highly competitive
preseason tournament, this weekend at
State College, Pa.
Between 15 and 20 teams will be
taking part in the tourney, including
most of the Ivy League schools and all of
the larger schools in the East. Carolina
fencing coach Ron Miller views the
upcoming tournament as a very
important one for the Heels at this point
in the year.
"The tournament at Penn State will
he the toughest intercollegiate
preseason competition in the country,"
Miller said. "Most of the returning AU
mericans from last year will be
competing this weekend. This
tournament and the one at Cornell
earlier this month are probably the most
important parts of our preseason. The
tournament at Penn State offers us a
good opportunity to gain some valuable
experience.
The action this weekend will be
entirely individual and no team scores
will be kept. There will be 22 to 24
members of the UNC men's and
women's squads making the trip.
"Last year we did pretty well." Miller
said. "We took second place in saber,
and we had two finalists in that weapon.
I think the majority of our fencers will
advance past the first two rounds and
that will be indicative of a good deal of
success at this time."
Other schools from the ACC
competing in the tournament are
Clemson, Maryland and N.C. State.
The action this weekend will be the last
pre-season tournament lor Carolina.

Wrestling tourney here this weekend
Coming off last weekend's strong performance in the
Monarch Open, the Tar Heel wrestling team issponsoringthe
preseason Carolina Invitational Friday and Saturday in
Carmichael Auditorium.
Eight schools will be competing, including some of the top
teams from the region. N.C. State, Duke and Virginia will
participate along with East Carolina, Appalachian State,
Pembroke and Old Dominion.
There will be no team scoring as each team will be allowed
to enter two wrestlers at each weight. As Carolina Coach Bill
Lam points out, "It will give the coaches a chance to look at
their entire team. If a coach has two men at the same weight,
he'll be able to watch both of them in competition."
The field looks outstanding. Virginia. State and Carolina
are probably the three top teams in the conference and sport
many outstanding wrestlers. Six of the ACC champs of last
year will be in the tournament, including UNC's Jeff
Reintgen. who is a two-time conference champ and winner of
the tournament's most outstanding wrestler last year. State
will have three returning champions, Terry Reese at 158, Joe
Lidowski at I90and heavyweight Lynn Morris. The other two
coming back are Virginia's Bob llarwick at 142 and Duke's
Doug Sumner at 126.
The first round will begin at noon Friday and end about 4
p.m. Wrestling will resume that night at 7 p.m. and run until
