For on that night, the Tar Heels will have completed a string of six ACC contests in 14 days. And right now, all of them look to be against very strong opposition. Carolina's schedule this year ranks among the nation's toughest, if only because it includes 12 games with ACC opponents. But the Heels have several tough contests set with non-league foes. Cincinnati (Dec. 17, Greensboro) has won the Metro 7 , championship two years running and is a strong favorite to do so again. In fact, the Bearcats are listed high m many preseason polls. Six-foot-10 center Bob Miller, the team's MVP and an All-America hopeful, leads the Bearcats. Rutgers (Feb. 11, New York) annually battles Providence (Dec. 27 through 30, Rainbow Classic, Honolulu, and Feb. 22, Providence, R.l.) for Eastern basketball supremacy. Rutgers, which advanced to the Final Four two years ago, is led by 6-foot-9 All-America candidate James Bailey. Providence lost two starters from last year's 24-5 team but the Friars' strong defensive play among other attributes make them a healthy challenge. Tulane (Dec. 23, New Orleans) annually gives Carolina a good game, witnessed by the four-overtime marathon the Heels won the last time they travelled to the Green Wave's, home. Roy Danforth had an excellent recruiting year, signing two prep All-Americas. Virginia Tech replaces Georgia Tech in the North-South Doubleheader and should strengthen the event which includes UNC and N.C. State. Furman should be one ot the better teams in the Southern Conference. Carolina shouldn't have much trouble with the remainder of its non-league schedule, which includes William and Mary, Rochester, Mercer and Kent State. Interesting games involving other ACC teams include Duke's Dec. 10 clash at Southern California and Maryland's games Jan. 29 at Notre Dame and in College Park Feb. 4. against Nevada-Las Vegas. - LEE PACE tiiaviMiirs iwtory ccnpiy AST f pl.wm.vkas in pi iMouv t ..i. ............
