I Ab!PS Vassar Clements here Vassar Clements, called by some the premier fiddler in the world, will play at 9 tonight at the Mad Hatter in downtown Chapel Hill. Sam Milner, Raleigh singer and songwriter, will also be featured. Clements, a native Floridian who now calls Nashville home, first appeared in the Grand Ole Opry with Bill Monroe in 1949 and in 1950 made his first recording as a member of Monroe's Bluegrass Boys. The fiddler spent a number of years traveling between Nashville and his hometown of Orlando. He worked in a Georgia papcrmill, worked at Cape Kennedy, worked as a railroad switchman and ran a potato chip franchise. In 1971 Clements gained national exposure with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and overnight became involved in studio recordings and guest appearances, ranging from bluegrass to jazz to rock.
