Vassar Clements here
Vassar Clements, called by some the premier fiddler in the world, will play at 9 tonight at
the Mad Hatter in downtown Chapel Hill. Sam Milner, Raleigh singer and songwriter, will
also be featured.
Clements, a native Floridian who now calls Nashville home, first appeared in the Grand
Ole Opry with Bill Monroe in 1949 and in 1950 made his first recording as a member of
Monroe's Bluegrass Boys.
The fiddler spent a number of years traveling between Nashville and his hometown of
Orlando. He worked in a Georgia papcrmill, worked at Cape Kennedy, worked as a railroad
switchman and ran a potato chip franchise.
In 1971 Clements gained national exposure with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and overnight
became involved in studio recordings and guest appearances, ranging from bluegrass to jazz
to rock.
Tickets are $5.50 and are available at the door.
