Soccer fails
in state title
Carolina's junior varsity soccer
team narrowly lost in its bid to be
champion of the North Carolina
Soccer League Sunday in Greensboro,
losing 3-2 to the Pressbox Soccer Club
of Charlotte.
"It was the best championship game
I've seen since I've' been connected
with the North Carolina Soccer
League," Carolina's jayvee coach Tim
Morse said.
Carolina scored first on an
unassisted goal by Christ Brown 10
minutes into the match. Pressbox
scored 10 minutes later on a penalty
kick and again before the half to lead
2-1.
Phil Shellman scored an unassisted
goal for Carolina in thesecond half to
tie the game until a Pressbox player
drilled a shot in with 10 minutes left in
the match.
Carolina could have tied the score,
but a penalty kick by the team failed.
Women suffer
1st cage loss

BOONE The Carolina women's
basketball team, plagued by a slow first half,
41 errors and a poor appearance at the free
throw line, suffered its first defeat Friday as
Appalachian State beat the Tar Heels, 93-84.
Carolina's defense faltered somewhat in
the first half, allowing ASU to score on
several fastbreaks and build a 46-36 halftime
lead. Carolina switched to man-to-man
defense in the second half, forced several
turnovers and cut the lead to 52-49 at 15:37.
ASU then built a nine-point lead that
UNC's Rochelle Small helped chop to 66-63,
but the Lady Apps opened it back to 1 1 at 77
66 with 6:33 to play.
Carolina fouled often in the last few
minutes trying to catch up, but ASU's deadly
free thrown shooting kept the Lady Apps
ahead.
UNC coach Jennifer Alley cited the team's
poor first half as a big factor in the loss. "We
had a slow sluggish start. Our first half hurt,
but I was very proud of the second half,"
Alley said.
She also noted the free shooting of her
team as a whole and of ASU's outstanding
freshman, Donna Elrod. UNC shot only 14
of 25 from the line. Elrod had 13 of her 21
points from her attempts at the line.
ASU coach Judy Clark also cited.Elr.odY,
free throws, but felt the leadership of junior:
Carol Almond was one -of the keys to their
win.
Alley, who noted that the Tar Heels
"showed sparks of a fine team," said the team
would now look to Tuesday night's game
with nationally ranked Old Dominion.
High scorers for the Tar Heels were
Bernadette McGlade and Rochelle Small
with 13 each. Aprille Shaffer, a High Point
freshman, addeJ 10 points.

Men swimmers 1st at Penn State; women nip Wolf pack
Men edge Pittsburgh
after dual meet loss

Going into the last event of the UNC-Pittsburgh swim
meet Thursday, the score was 54-52 in favor of Pitt. The
seven points a relay win would give would be enough for
either team to pull out a victory in a meet that had been
close from the start.
When the 400-yard free relay was over, the Panthers
had escaped with a narrow 61-52 win. They had won the
relay by :03 of a second, according to the electronic
timing devices.
"The machine makes the decision but the judges
picked Carolina. . .the human eye picked Carolina,"
Carolina coach Frank Comfort said.
Comfort was not questioning the reliability of the
machine. "That's why machines are great; they
eliminate human error," he said.
"It was just a fantastic, fantastic meet. The times we
swam were incredible," Comfort said. "It's the best dual
meet Carolina has swum in six years."
UNC took the 400-yard medley, setting a pool record;
freshman Ken Ireland won the 200-yard free; co-captain
Rich DeSelm sliced another record enroute to his win in
the 200-yard individual medley, knocking four seconds
off his best time in the event; Fritz Homans captured the
200-yard fly; and Tim Balderston finished first in the
100-yard free.
In the 200-yard back Mark List made an impressive
showing.- Not only did he win, he topped Stewart
Swanson, who is now in East Germany representing the
United States in its meet with the East German team.

swims in Carolina's dual meet loss to Pittsburgh Friday. The Heels came back over the weekend to

Pitt took the top two spots in both the one and three
meter competition.
"They are the best in the East (in diving) bar none. So
we weren't shocked," Comfort said.
Saturday Carolina and Pitt were jit it again in the
Penn State Relays. While the story was the same, the
ending was changed.
The Carolina swimmers dominated the meet from the
onset with Pitt right on their heels.
"All we were concerned about was where we stood in
relation to Pitt. You don't worry about the score, you
worry about how many points you're ahead," Comfort
said.
UNC finished first with 312 points; Pitt was second
with 282. Defending champion Maryland was third
with 218, and East Carolina University and Maine tied
for fourth at 1 92 points.
Carolina swept eight of the 10 swimming events,
setting pool records in all eight.
"I've never seen a team dominate a competition like
we did." Comfort said.
An injury to Tim l.ucido in the one-meter diving
threw a scare into the Heels as the meet continued to be
close despite the first-place muscle Carolina was
showing.
"1 he races where Pitt couldn't stay with us is where
we made up for the diving." Comfort said.
The Tar Heels took the 400-yard butterfly relay, tree
relay, back relay, breast relay, medley relay and
individual relay. They also swam to blues in the 200
yard free and medley relays.
Brown, Marshall lead
women's victory rally
Assistant Swim Coach Alan Toll said, "It has to be
the most incredible comeback 1 have ever seen."
The UNC women's swim team, down by 64 points to
rival N.C. State after the first of two days of swimming
in the North Carolina A1AW Championships in
Raleigh came from behind to topple the Pack by one
point. 797-796.
"I know State thought they had it in the bag." l oll
said. "It was beautiful."
Puke finished third with 577 points; Appalachian
State was fourth at 148 and East Carolina finished with
102 points.
Co-captain Bonnie Brown and Ann Marshall led the
way for the Heels. Brown won the 100-yard freeand the
1(H)- and 200-yard individual medleys. She was also
second in the 100-yard back and fourth in the 200-yard
free.

Event No. 13 proved to be the lucky event lor
Carolina,
"We were behind in the meet from the beginning to
the 500-frees. I hat was our big event." l oll said.
Realizing the race was acrticial one to their chances in
the 16-event meet, the swimmers coralled 9 of the 16
places in the event. Going into it they were down 621
SSI. Outscoringthe Pack 101-30. Carolina jumped into
the lead for the first time at 682-651.
